Have you ever wondered what it's like to have a Balikbayan parent at a young age?

Behind every Balikbayan parent going back and forth in the country, there are junior high school students continuously adapting to their changing environment. It's not easy, but also gives them meaning and opportunities to reflect on their experiences.

This study is something personal to the researchers as it is also something that they have experienced.
With this, the student researchers majoring in psychology, took this as an opportunity to conduct the study "Exploring the Adaptability of Junior High School Students with Balikbayan Parents: A Phenomenological Study" using a qualitative method. This enabled the researchers to gain a deeper understanding regarding the perspectives of the left-behind children of OFWs about their parents. Here, the researchers were able to generate 9 themes namely: Constant Communication and Pieces of Advice, Spending Quality Time, Detachment, Extended Family and Other Support Systems, Comfort and Material Support, Understanding Family Set-Up and Acceptance, Adjustment and Compromise and; Motivation and Aspirations.

To those students who have Balikbayan parents, you are not alone in these challenges and may this study give you more clarity on your experiences and to stay true, kind, understanding and optimistic.

📢 SMU Grade School Visits SMU Junior High School & Science High School! 🎉

On February 26, 2025, the Grade 6 students of SMU Grade School had an exciting campus tour at SMU Junior High School and Science High School! 🏫✨

The students arrived at 1:30 PM and were warmly welcomed through a short program, which included:
✅ Welcoming Remarks from the School Principal 🎤
✅ Icebreaker Activity led by the Psychology student interns 🎭
✅ Information Session about SMU and the enrollment process by the Registrar 📄
✅ Campus Tour – Students got the chance to visit various school facilities, classrooms, and specialized learning spaces used by teachers and students! 👩‍🏫🏫

This event gave the pupils a glimpse of what awaits them in Junior High School, building excitement for the next step in their academic journey! 💙💛
