SAPSS Highest Award for Prof. Pearl B. Sanchez

One of the highlights of the International Seminar on Soil Examination and Field Description at VSU from October 21-24, 2025, was the conferment as Fellow, SAPSS highest award, upon Dr. Pearl Basilio Sanchez, professor of soil science at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and one of the pillars of Philippine soil science. The citation reads:

"For her exceptional and sustained contribution to the advancement of Soil Science in the country through outstanding performance in teaching, research, administration, service, and mentoring. She has inspired and mentored a generation of soil scientists, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and professional service".

The award was presented to Prof. Sanchez by Prof. V.B. Asio (SAPSS President), Prof. S,B. Lina (SAPSS Vice President), and Dr. D.M. Lumanao (SAPSS Secretary). As an awardee, Prof. Sanchez is granted "Life Membership" of SAPSS.

The International Seminar on Soil Examination and Field Description officially opened its first day with warm and inspiring remarks from Dr. Victor B. Asio, President of the Society for the Advancement of Philippine Soil Science (SAPSS). Adding momentum to the event, Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes, President of Visayas State University (VSU), delivered an empowering message highlighting the critical role of soil science in sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

Participants engaged in a series of highly informative lectures covering soil physical, chemical, and biological property determination, as well as plotting depth functions. These sessions were led by distinguished Resource Speakers: Mr. Anane Serenina, Ms. Dyana Rose M. Oraiz, and Dr. Deejay M. Lumanao from the Department of Soil Science, VSU; Dr. Ian A. Navarrete from the Department of Environmental Science, SLSU-Hinunangan; and Mr. Leo Jude D. Villasica from Caraga State University.

The day also featured a special recognition as SAPSS conferred its highest honor, the Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Philippine Soil Science, to Dr. Pearl B. Sanchez, Professor of Soil Science, UPLB, in acknowledgment of her outstanding contributions to the field.

The expert presentations provided participants with practical, cutting-edge knowledge and techniques essential for accurate soil analysis, ensuring that the seminar not only imparts skills but also fosters collaboration and innovation in soil science.
