The Mid-Project Review (MPR) of the ongoing ACIARโ€“PCAARRD funded projects titled โ€œManaging Heavy Metals and Soil Contaminants in Vegetable Production to Ensure Food Safety and Environmental Health in the Philippinesโ€ (ACIAR SLaM/2020/117) and โ€œAssessment and Management of Plant Essential Heavy Metals (PEHM), Nutrients, and Pathogens in Vegetable Production to Enhance Soil Health and Food Safety in the Philippinesโ€ was held at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, on August 21, 2025.

The review featured the presentation of project updates and key accomplishments from each collaborating institution โ€” the University of Queensland (UQ), University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos (UPLB), Visayas State University (VSU), and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)โ€“Claveria. Discussions also highlighted the challenges encountered during project implementation and the strategies developed to improve future activities.

The review panel was composed of representatives from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOSTโ€“PCAARRD), through its Agricultural Resources Management Research Division (ARMRD).

On August 20, 2025, the ACIAR SLAM/PCAARRD PEHM Project team from the University of Queensland (UQ), University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos (UPLB), Visayas State University (VSU), and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)โ€“Claveria, together with PCAARRDโ€™s Agricultural Resources Management Research Division (ARMRD), visited vegetable farms in Claveria, Misamis Oriental.

During the visit, the team observed field experiments established by the USTP Claveria project team and conducted interviews with local farm owners. Information gathered included the varieties of crops planted, types and amounts of fertilizers and pesticides used, and their frequency of application. Farmers also shared insights on their target markets and key challenges, such as the rising costs of farm inputs and the low market prices of their produce.

The ACIAR SLAM/PCAARRD PEHM VSU project team, together with Dr. Steve Harper from the University of Queensland, Australia, visited the vegetable farms in Cabintan, Ormoc City, Leyte, on May 5, 2025. The visit aimed to support the ongoing field experiments of the team assessing the effects of micronutrient application on vegetable production. Dr. Harper provided valuable technical guidance to the project team in refining experimental procedures and evaluating field conditions.

During the visit, several production issues were also identified, including diseases caused by bacteria and viruses, as well as infestations from insect pests and nematodesโ€”factors that significantly affect the productivity and quality of vegetable crops in the area.

Cabintan is one of the project sites of the ACIAR-SLAM/PCAARRD-PEHM project. It is known as the vegetable bowl of Eastern Visayas, the major supplier of vegetables in the region. Farmers in this area engage in intensive vegetable cultivation due to the mild upland climate and the favorable properties of the volcanic soil, which provide ideal conditions for growing various types of vegetables.
