The VSU Debate Society and the Visayas Debate Union express their deep concern over the recent red-tagging of members of the VSU academic community, and stand in solidarity with the VSU University Supreme Student Council (USSC) and the Faculty Supreme Student Councils (FSSCs) in calling for the protection of student rights.
The incident arose from a commemoration of the EDSA Revolution. A nationally recognized event symbolizing the Filipino people's collective commitment to democracy and freedom. A publicly circulated post subsequently named and exposed students online, with comments labeling them as members of insurgent groups without any substantive basis. The university was likewise implicated, its name associated with the event in a manner that misrepresented its nature and scope.
We wish to be clear: participation in a civic commemoration is not grounds for suspicion. The students involved exercised rights that are constitutionally protected and socially encouraged. Red-tagging, as affirmed in Philippine legal and jurisprudential discourse, poses a serious risk to a person's life, liberty, and security.
We firmly call on Visayas State University to look into this matter, affirm its commitment to academic freedom, and take meaningful steps to ensure the safety and dignity of its students.
Every student, debater, and Filipino deserves to learn, assemble, and participate in civic life without fear. We hope this matter is met with the seriousness and care it deserves.
