In celebration of World Soil Day 2025, the Department of Soil Science conducted a seminar last Friday, December 12, 2025, centered on the theme “Healthy Soil for Healthy Cities.”

The seminar featured presentations from MSc students Christine Joy Gasatan, Kent Iverson Sagusay, and Felix Matarikisi, highlighting the role of soil science in urban development, disaster risk reduction, and food security. Topics included GIS mapping applications in the Philippines, soil hydro-physical properties in landslide-prone areas, and sustainable agriculture for ending hunger.

The activity emphasized the importance of healthy soils in creating safer and more sustainable cities.

𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟐: 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐑𝐁 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐕𝐒𝐔 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨-𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦

The Department of Soil Science marked Day 2 of the World Soil Day 2025 celebration with a field activity where students and faculty joined visiting professors from Poland for hands-on soil classification at the Visayas State University Coffee and Cacao Techno-Demo and Learning Farm.

Using the World Reference Base for Soil Resources, the group examined soil profiles, discussed key diagnostic features and compared observations on site. The activity showed how global classification standards are applied in real landscapes, adding depth to the week’s ongoing focus on soil education and collaboration.

The week-long celebration of World Soil Day 2025, carrying the theme “𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒚 𝑺𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒚 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔,” opened with a successful and insightful lecture series featuring 𝐃𝐫. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧 Ś𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐤 and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐏𝐫𝐳𝐞𝐦𝐲𝐬ł𝐚𝐰 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐳𝐲ń𝐬𝐤𝐢 from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. The session covered key topics on the World Reference Base for Soil Resources and offered a closer look at Poland’s environment, geography, culture, and tourism.

Thank you to our speakers, organizers, and participants for setting a strong start to this year’s celebration. Your dedication and enthusiasm paved the way for an engaging and memorable week ahead.
