United Against Malaria: Walang Maiiwan ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐ŸŒฟ

Through candle lighting, solidarity messages, and collective action, the event became a space of remembrance for the lives lost, support for People Living with HIV (PLHIV), and renewed commitment in combating against HIV & AIDS stigma and discrimination.

Among those who delivered messages of solidarity was the City Government of Batangas through the representation of our Equality Champion City Councilor Claudette Ambida, who has consistently stood with Wagayway Equality and supported its initiatives in advancing social inclusion, community empowerment, and local policy advocacy in Batangas City. Also in attendance was Engr. Sammy Perez, Chairperson of the Batangas City People's Council (BCPC), who while had joined the commemorative gathering for the first time among his CSO-engagements, had expressed sympathy and solidarity with the community while recognizing the importance of continuing inclusive advocacy and collective action.

Ms. Ericka Claud, a staff member of the Equality Desk, shared her Testimony of Hope by reflecting on her journey from serving as a volunteer to becoming one of the Peer Educator at Equality Desk supporting HIV-related services. Through her experience, she highlighted how community involvement and advocacy empowered her to grow into a role where she now assists clients and community members through education, support, and strengthened access to HIV services, embodying hope, resilience, and service to others.

Anchored on this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œLight the Legacy: Remember. Advance. Act. Keeping the Light Alive,โ€ the commemoration stood as a powerful reminder that the fight against HIV and AIDS continues through awareness, compassion, and community action.

The said activity was initiated by Wagayway Equality, Inc., as organized by the Office of the Executive Director (OED) and IACM 2026 Working Committee (with JO Creatives), in partnership with Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Batangas City, supported by Ascend Development Solutions (ADS), and enjoined with the Philippine National AIDS Council (thru DOH-PNAC KP Representative Aivan Alvarez)

We continue to reach even the most remote communities to provide services in education, awareness, at free HIV testing, together with Brgy. 15 Tingloy, Batangas led by Hon. Alberto A. Manalo (Barangay Chairman), Hon. Jommel Manalo (SK Chairman), and Hon. Romeo Onda Jr. (Barangay Councilor, Committee on Health), through community-based outreach efforts that aim to strengthen public health education and improve access to essential health services at the grassroots level.

This initiative features interactive learning sessions on HIV 101 by Mr. John Aries Almodjel, SOGIESC 101 by Mx. Chan Leong, and RA 11166 by Mx. Kirk Sison, focusing on providing accurate and accessible information about HIV prevention, testing, and care; promoting understanding of SOGIESC concepts to encourage respect and inclusivity; and discussing the key provisions of Republic Act 11166, which protects the rights and welfare of persons affected by HIV.

We also conducted HIV screening services during the outreach to provide accessible and confidential testing for community members, helping promote early detection, awareness of HIV status, and timely linkage to care and support services when needed. This effort reinforces the importance of regular testing as part of overall health and prevention.

Through these discussions and services, the program aims to address misinformation, reduce stigma and discrimination, and empower individuals to make informed, responsible, and health-positive decisions. It also emphasizes the importance of early testing, awareness, and community support systems in building healthier and more informed communities.

Through continuous collaboration, education, and community engagement, we remain committed to promoting inclusive, stigma-free, and accessible healthcare for all, especially in underserved and far-flung communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in access to health information and services.

Wagayway Equality joins communities around the world in commemorating the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2026 today with this yearโ€™s theme: โ€œLight the Legacy: Remember. Advance. Act. Keeping the Light Alive.โ€

As we remember the lives lost to HIV & AIDS, we also honor the resilience of People Living with HIV (PLHIV), advocates, healthcare workers, and communities who continue to advance the movement for compassion, dignity, awareness, and equality.

More than a memorial, the IACM is a call for solidarity and collective action โ€” to continue fighting stigma and discrimination, strengthen HIV awareness and prevention efforts, and uphold a people-centered and inclusive HIV response for all.

We thank you those who enjoined us in today's commemoration.

Together, let us continue keeping the light alive. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธโค๏ธ

Wagayway Equality, together with our Equality Champion Awardee City Councilor Claudette Ambida , officially endorses the โ€˜Twin Equality Ordinanceโ€™ bills - composing of the โ€œRight to Care (RTC) Ordinanceโ€ and โ€œEquality Desk Institutionalization Ordinanceโ€ bills to Batangas City Mayor Marvey Mariรฑo last Monday, May 12, 2026.

Upon endorsement, Mayor Mariรฑo expressed his support for the proposed ordinance bills and subsequently endorsed them to the City Legal Office for further review and eventual endorsement to the Sangguniang Panlungsod to facilitate the legislative process, from official filing, committee hearings, plenary readings and eventual approval and implementation of such ordinances in Batangas City.

The Right to Care (RTC) Ordinance Bill, which has grown momentum being passed or in the process of legislation across cities and provinces in the Philippines, is a local policy that can allow individuals, including those in non-traditional relationships such as LGBTQIA+ couples, solo parents, and OFWs among others, to designate their health care proxy - whether a trusted partner or chosen family member - to make health care decisions on their behalf in cases of emergencies or if incapacitated.

Meanwhile, the Equality Desk Institutionalization Ordinance Bill, aims to institutionalize and provide sustainability to the already-existing Equality Desk in the city, for which it serves as the official local mechanism to promote and protect the rights of gender-diverse persons, key populations, and people living with HIV (PLHIV), address HIV, SOGIESC, and human rights-related concerns, and coordinate health, rights, and socio-economic service delivery through a structured referral and support system - that if passed, will be the โ€˜firstโ€™ of its own in the Philippines.

Together, these two ordinance bills, composing of the so-called โ€œTwin Equality Ordinanceโ€ aims to towards a more inclusive and compassionate Batangas City since its passing of the Gender Fair Ordinance in 2016.

Maraming salamat sa Wagayway Equality Partners - Equality Desk Co-Creator Congw. Beverley Dimacuha (Community Ally Hero Awardee), DOH PNAC Representative Aivan Alvarez (Community Hero Honoree), Konsehala Aileen Montalbo, Ascend Development Solutions (ADS), Treyna Group thru the Right to Care Card, LAGABLAB Network, UP Gender Law and Policy Program (UP GLPP), LGBTQIA - SILBI Batangas City Inc., partner organizations, advocates, and community leaders, volunteers, and allies who continue to stand with us in advancing inclusive governance, LGBTQIA+ protection, access to health and HIV services, community-led policy development, and people-centered healthcare access for all.

Hindi na tayo pa-whisper lang โ€” road to Right to Care na talaga. โœŠ๐Ÿฝ๐ŸŒˆ
