At the heart of the Coral Triangle lies the Verde Island Passage (VIP), a biodiverse marine corridor in the Philippines, adorned with vibrant corals, abundant fish species, and a thriving community of marine creatures. It is dubbed the 'center of the center of marine shorefish biodiversity' due to its high concentration of species per unit area, making it comparable to no less than an 'Amazon of the oceans'. This marine paradise also gives life above its rich waters, providing livelihood and food to over 2 million Filipinos. However, the colorful marine life in its waters is currently tainted by the imminent threats it is facing today.

Dive with us and discover our Verde Island Passage โ€“ a paradise in peril.

Visit our exhibit at the ground floor of the National Museum of Natural History to see the wonders lying in this marine paradise, its communities, and the pressing threats it is currently facing. The exhibit will open on November 7 and will run for three months, so donโ€™t miss your chance in immersing beneath and above the waters of our VIP!

For this week's feature of , let us meet the one-of-a-kind Sailfin Velifer of the Verde Island Passage!

Did you know? This is the only known photographic record of sailfin velifer in Southeast Asia. It is so rare that there are only few live photographs of it on the internet. ๐ŸŸ

Last March 2021, Filipino underwater photographer Danny Ocampo sighted and captured a photo of this rare fish during one of his dives at Anilao, Batangas, a part of the Verde Island Passage. ๐Ÿคฟ๐ŸŒŠ

It grows to a length of 40 centimeters. This fish is also likely to be associated with mesophotic reefs, according to marine biologist Jean Utzurum. However, because the sailfin velifer is so uncommon, scientists know very little of its biology.

The rare sighting of the sailfin velifer at the VIP is a testament of its rich biodiversity. There is still a lot to explore in this precious marine corridor, which only exemplifies the need for its greater protection.

Protecting the VIP also means protecting magnificent creatures like the rare sailfin velifer! ๐ŸŸ

As a testament to the organization's goal of encouraging the youth's participation in securing the safety of the marine biodiversity of the Verde Island Passage (VIP), Ecosilak Youth for VIP with the Center for Energy, Ecology and Development (CEED) in partnership with Saint Bridget Community Center Inc. (SBCCI) spearheaded a one-day open forum held at Saint Bridget College, last May 10.

Participated by more than one hundred students from Saint Bridget, Dela Salle Lipa and youth volunteers from Batangas City, the event seeks to inform the public why the preservation of VIP is an essential topic nowadays.

Father Michael Virtudao Flores, the head of AMEn, and Doctor Miguel Azcuna, a Marine Scientist from Batangas State University (BSU), served as the primarily speakers. Also in attendance, is Mr. Matthew Vincent Tabilog, the OCC of CEED.

Selected fisher folks affected by the recent Mindoro Oil spill also shared their experiences following the said environmental catastrophe, citing poor governmental responses and relief operations as their primary problems as of the moment.

As a culminating activity, the attendees were grouped and tasked with creating an artwork that will encompass their learnings. They presented their outputs and later signed a declaration created by Ecosilak, where they promised to be agents of change and preservation of the Verde Island Passage.

The Protect VIP Network asks for help collecting PET Bottles and Coco Husk to help prevent and solve the oil spill problems in Oriental Mindoro and protect the marine ecosystem. The PET Bottle and Coco husk serve as an improvised oil spill boom for temporary floating barriers.

The Ecosilak-Youth for VIP, together with the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) and Saint Bridget Community Center, Inc., successfully conducted an informative and awareness-raising Information and Education Campaign (IEC) at Malitam National High School last March 15.

The IEC aims to spread environmental information about the beauty and riches of the VIP and raise awareness of the negative impact of the oil spill that threatens the VIP and residents of affected areas.

Additionally, the activity aims to actively engage the youth, make them aware, and have them be part of the story and lineage of the Verde Island Passage.
