But waitโ€ฆ why do Filipinos start celebrating Christmas as early as September?

Well, September marks the beginning of the famous โ€œBer Monthsโ€โ€”September, October, November, and Decemberโ€”which Filipinos have culturally embraced as the start of the Christmas countdown. And perhaps one reason we begin so early is because we enjoy the anticipationโ€”the excitement of counting down the days until Christmas while slowly filling the season with music, traditions, family gatherings, and togetherness.

This early celebration is also deeply connected to the Philippinesโ€™ strong Christian traditions, where Christmas holds an important place in our faith and religious practices. But beyond religion, Christmas has become a meaningful part of Filipino cultureโ€”a season when families reunite, communities come together, and people create moments of joy and togetherness.

In other words, we Filipinos don't simply celebrate Christmas; we celebrate the journey toward it. From the first Christmas songs in September to the decorations, caroling, reunions, and traditions that follow, every month adds another layer to the excitement.
