A four-member team from the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Pharmacy Department secured fourth place in the โIPC Battlezone: Beyond the Usual Quiz,โ a fast-paced quiz bee conducted by the Infection Prevention and Control Unit (IPCU) of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) at the hospitalโs 5th Floor Function Hall on August 18, 2026.
The competition was held as part of the celebration of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week 2026, bringing together eight teams composed of four participants each from various health science disciplines and schools across Northern Luzon.
Representing MMSU were Ruth Nathalyn T. Diaz, Elijah Joeleeh V. Felipe, Waylan Kantrel B. Guiang, and Riane Maurel B. Lorenzo, all third-year Pharmacy students.
The MMSU team was the only group composed entirely of Pharmacy students, while the other teams were primarily composed of Medical Laboratory Science students, with some participants from Radiologic Technology and Physical Therapy. Many of their competitors were fourth-year interns from different schools across Northern Luzon, including institutions from areas such as La Union and Baguio.
Despite being third-year students with comparatively limited hands-on clinical experience, the MMSU team managed to compete against participants with extensive hospital exposure.
The quiz bee featured a fast-paced format, with the second round incorporating a betting system that challenged teams to strategically wager their points. Despite a few missteps in the betting round, the MMSU representatives remained composed and finished among the top-performing teams.
For the team, the competition served not only as a test of their knowledge in infection prevention and control but also as an opportunity to gain experience in applying their classroom learning in a competitive clinical setting.
The fourth-place win reflects the MMSU Pharmacy teamโs ability to keep pace with more clinically experienced competitors and rise to the challenge despite limited hands-on exposure.
