Scaling the peaks of excellence, mapping out a sustainable tomorrow! 🌿

The Aklan Trekkers - ASU proudly stood alongside the university's student leaders at the Office of Student Affairs and Services’ (OSAS) annual Pagkilaea ag Pagpadungog Recognition Day, held at the ASU Amphitheater on Thursday, May 18.

This year’s theme, "𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞," perfectly mirrors our organization's core values of conservation, active citizenship, and sustainable outdoor leadership.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work of every member, officer, and adviser who continuous to champion environmental awareness both on and off campus. As we face another year of adventures, we recommit ourselves to protecting our natural spaces and empowering the youth.

AKLAN TREKKERS – ASU EXECUTIVE MEETING

The Aklan Trekkers – ASU conducted its final Executive Meeting on May 13, 2026 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the Science Building, Aklan State University for the A.Y 2025-2026.

This meeting aimed to strengthen the organization’s leadership, improve internal coordination, and address important organizational matters that contribute to the continuous growth and sustainability of Aklan Trekkers–ASU. It also served as an avenue for collaboration among officers in making informed decisions that will benefit the organization and its members for the upcoming academic year. 🌱

Key agenda covered:

✅ Election of new executive officers for A.Y. 2026–2027

✅ Finalization of pending financial transactions

✅ Distribution of membership certificates

✅ Discussion of institutional email concerns

✅ Other organizational matters

Through this meeting, the organization seeks to uphold accountability, effective communication, and active participation in promoting environmental stewardship, citizen science, and sustainability initiatives within and beyond the university community.🙌

🌍 𝐀𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 - 𝐀𝐒𝐔 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

As we celebrate 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝗔𝗧 - 𝗔𝗦𝗨 capped its 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘆𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 with a 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 led by 𝗠𝗿. 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴 of 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝗔𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗰. 🐦🌿

The hills aren’t as silent as we initially deemed, we just hadn’t learned to hear them yet. Each call, flutter, and flash of color is a reminder: this ecosystem is alive, balanced, and fragile. 💚

Celebrate nature, spot our feathered locals, and see why protecting our skies matters. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘆𝗼𝗴 isn’t just a view, it’s home to species we often overlook. Protecting habitat means protecting them. 🌳🍃

Listen, observe, protect the wings over 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘆𝗼𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 and everywhere else, where life thrives and exists. 🦅

Why Preserving Local and Indigenous Names Matters More Than Content

Lately, some influencers have been assigning new names to mountains, rivers, and waterfalls for content. However, many of these places already have indigenous or community-given names that carry history, meaning, and identity.

Indigenous Peoples and local communities name places based on how they describe their shape, mark important events or landmarks, refer to species found in the area, or reflect spiritual beliefs tied to the land. These names are deeply rooted in the culture and memory of communities who have lived there for generations.

Renaming a place because you believe you were the first to “discover” it can be disrespectful, especially when local communities have known, used, and cared for it long before it became visible online. It risks erasing history, disconnecting the place from its cultural roots, and creating the false impression that it is "new" or only recently discovered.

A more culturally sensitive approach is to learn and use the original local or indigenous name, engage with elders and community members about its meaning, and understand its cultural, historical, or spiritual significance. Recognizing these names helps preserve not just the identity of the place, but also the stories of the people connected to it.

Not every hidden spot needs a catchy title for content. We can simply use the original name, share its story, and give proper recognition to the communities that have cared for it for generations.

Places are not trends. They are part of people’s heritage. Instead of renaming them, we should honor the names that already exist.

𝗔𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 - 𝗔𝗦𝗨 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘆𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 & 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭𝟱 𝗮𝘁 𝟴:𝟬𝟬 𝗔𝗠 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗦𝗨 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗮ñ𝗼.

The activity started with a welcoming message by AT - ASU President, followed by the introduction to the basics of trees and their unique features by For. Rebaño.

Using a tree map made by first year BS Forestry students, the participants identified various native, endemic, and exotic tree species.

The activity also highlighted the variety of purposes of tree species, from timber to traditional medicinal uses.

The activity concluded with a reflection and knowledge sharing by the participants.

Aklan Trekkers - ASU received a recognition during the 108th Foundation Anniversary and 25th Charter Day Celebration of Aklan State University on
April 13, 2026, at 1:00 PM, at ASU Kalibo Campus.

The organization was recognized as one of the "𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿" for the initiative "A Month of Action: A Series on Celebrating Environmental Awareness Month and Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week".

This award reflects the dedication of the former and current organizers, as well as the supporters, towards environmental conservation and climate change awareness.

The organization was represented by Aklan Trekkers ASU's President, Dir. for Operations, and Organizational Advisers.
