What if I told you that an onion may make you cry, but it can also teach you how to make friends?
𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲, developed by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor, discusses how people gradually become closer to each other through what we call self-disclosure.
The theory explains that for a relationship to develop, two factors should be present: 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ, or the range of different topics we engage in, and 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ, or how deep or intimate the conversation becomes. A conversation may start shallow and nonchalant and gradually turn into something closer, friendlier, and more intimate.
Social Pe*******on Theory also states that relationships develop through what we willingly choose to share with each other. On the first day, we might talk about our favorite foods, colors, and other mundane stuff. Then, the next day, we might talk about our struggles in school, one weird habit, and that one person from school (oh, oh~).
Imagine peeling an onion. Every layer you peel represents a level of intimacy you’ve achieved with that person. The closer you get to the core, the more you understand the person.
So, the next time you cry while cutting an onion, maybe it can remind you of how layered and complex humans are by nature. If we slowly peel away our covers, perhaps understanding will find its way into our hearts and maybe, the tears will explain themselves.
