Today, we celebrate the intelligence, resilience, spirit, and heart of our beloved Aspins, our very own Asong Pinoy.

Too often, Aspins are overlooked without people ever getting the chance to know them. But those who have had the privilege of loving one know just how special they are. They are loyal, clever, funny, affectionate, and each one carries a personality entirely their own.

Hereโ€™s to every Aspin already loved as family, cared for in our communities, and still waiting in shelters for their own families to find them. May more people see just how much love and joy an Aspin can bring into a home ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

On August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook Colombia. In Cali, the Ana Pilar building, in the Cuarto de Legua neighborhood, collapsed in seconds.

Beneath the rubble was Lenny Ruiz Fernรกndez, a lawyer from Pasto, Nariรฑo, who had lived in the city for years. And beside her, her dog Salomรณn.

When rescue teams reached Lenny, they found her lifeless. But her body was not alone: Salomรณn was still there, beneath her, breathing.

The rescuers agreed on one thing: the position in which Lenny ended up was no accident. Her body had shielded the dog throughout the collapse, like a final decision made amid the chaos.

Salomรณn was rescued alive. Lenny could not make it out.

She was part of the Animal Defense Board of Pasto, a place where caring for animals was not an occasional gesture but a way of life. That same instinct, the last one she had, was what saved her dog.

Today, her family and those who knew her say goodbye to her with sorrow, but also with something like pride: the certainty that, even as she fell, Lenny chose to protect.

Some loves do not need words to be proven. Lennyโ€™s was written in the exact way she fell.

Are You a Compassion Hoarder?

Rescuing an animal is a noble act. Sadly, every rescuer must also accept one difficult reality, we cannot save them all.

Every rescue has limits. Whether it's space, financial resources, time, or manpower, there comes a point when taking in one more animal may compromise the welfare of those already in our care.

Compassion hoarding, also known as rescue hoarding, is a recognized and well-documented phenomenon in animal welfare. Compassion hoarding often isn't about intentionally collecting animals. It's about believing you must respond to every rescue request, every tag on social media, taking every animal posted online in need of help, taking hundreds of impounded animals at the municipal pound, and every call asking you to take in just one more. Over time, that constant pressure can make you lose sight of your own limits. Instead of making thoughtful, sustainable decisions, you begin operating from guilt and the fear of saying no. It can also stem from the belief that you are the only one who can save them.

However, as the number of animals continues to grow, the ability to provide proper care gradually declines. What starts as rescue can eventually become neglect.

Compassion hoarding is often characterized by a combination of the following warning signs:

โ€ข Overcrowding โ€“ Too many animals housed in limited space, leading to stress, disease, and poor welfare.

โ€ข Declining standards of care โ€“ Inadequate nutrition, lack of clean water, poor sanitation, delayed or insufficient veterinary care, untreated illnesses, or failure to provide appropriate individual care.

โ€ข Tunnel vision โ€“ Becoming so focused on rescuing more animals that the deteriorating condition of the animals already in their care is overlooked.

โ€ข Refusing accountability โ€“ Dismissing legitimate concerns or insisting everything is fine despite obvious signs that the animals' welfare is declining.

Before taking in another animal, ask yourself:

Can I provide this animal, and every animal already in my care, with the quality of life they deserve?

Sometimes, the most compassionate thing a rescuer can do is recognize their limits.

Could you be rescuing animals... or could you be becoming a compassion hoarder?
