From computing numbers and formulas to using the arts to share impactful stories with the community, who would have thought that an ordinary engineering student who grew up watching remarkable communication and media practitioners would become one, despite the diversity of his field?
Taking up a civil engineering program, which teaches more technical skills, Mr. Keneth V. Poblete, the former editor-in-chief of The Guilds (A.Y. 2024-2025)โthe official student publication of Bataan Peninsula State University Main Campusโshared that beyond the walls of their office and beyond the load of their responsibilities, he has found the organization and its members to be a safe space where he can freely harness his artistic side.
โIf it wasn't for the publication, I feel like I would have given up a long time ago. Because the publication gives me a reason to continue and gives me life as a student,โ Poblete shared.
Thanks to his mom, who urged Mr. Poblete to join a student publication after mistakenly sending the application form for a different BPSU campusโ student publication, he joined The Guildsโboldly rejecting the thought of being a stagnant student.
Staying with the publication throughout his whole collegiate career, Poblete has been awarded multiple times in different campus journalism competitions, including the Outstanding Tertiary Campus Journalist of Central Luzon award for the 4th Young Journalists Press Freedom Congress, 2025. He was also honored as the 8th Place Individual Highest Pointer at the 23rd Regional Higher Education Press Conference this year.
Mr. Poblete is proof that the burning passion for the arts isn't just for those who take up art majors; it is for everyone who sees the beauty and value of liberal arts. To him, utilizing one's platform and channel is an essential way to inspire others, especially students, to open their hearts and minds to the issues that are happening in the country.
โAs a campus journalist, I always think, yes, itโs satisfying to fight for the students, but it feels even better to have them fighting alongside you,โ Poblete added.
But aside from the awards and recognitions he received, Mr. Poblete noted that there is nothing more fulfilling than the drive and motivation that they are able to pass on to the youth through their workshops, seminars, and published articles.
โItโs heartwarming to see that while you teach them, they become very inspired, enthusiastic, and optimistic about what they do. The passion that once sparked within you, you begin to see it in others, and in a way, you become part of why their passion ignites even more,โ
Mr. Pobleteโs story and journey as a student leader who embraced his love and passion for the community through the arts is a testimony to the power one holds in fostering the ability to share impactful stories with the world. And to think that he was a product of people who are now reigning in the communication field, like Kara David, Ricky Lee, Jose Javier Reyes, and many more, it affirms the fact that a communication student like you bears great potential to create societal change and influence many more people like him.
