Today, VFW Post 124 joins the nation in recognizing Juneteenth, a day that celebrates the enduring spirit of freedom.
On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to issue General Order No. 3, ensuring the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation. But the enforcement of that freedom was largely secured by the Union Army—including the roughly 180,000 Black soldiers of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) who took up arms during the Civil War.
As veterans, we know that freedom is never guaranteed; it is defended. Today, we honor the legacy of the USCT, the Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen, and the generations of Black service members who fought valiantly for the United States—even during times when those very freedoms were denied to them at home.
Take time today to reflect on this history, celebrate the progress made, and honor all those who have stood on the front lines to defend liberty for everyone. 🇺🇸
