CONGRATULATIONS, SELENA AND SHANNON!!

💫 first international novice championship of BCHS Debate Society.
💫 Succeeded by the first international open break from Empire IV.
💫 Second time teaming up—and already legends.

At the Kampala Debate Open 2026 – Jo’Burg Edition, Selena Denise Cunanan (Grade 12 HUMSS 1) and Azis Shannon Matnao (Grade 12 HUMSS 3) didn’t just compete, they made BCHS Debate Society history. Out of 187 teams from across the globe, this powerhouse duo rose through the ranks to become Novice Champions, securing the first-ever open international championship for BCHS. And in the process, they proved that second-time partnerships sometimes make the best sequels.

For Selena, this win was much more than a trophy. Having faced heartbreaks in novice grandfinals before her “multo,” as she jokingly calls it, she finally got the chance to rewrite her story. Kampala’s rules, which treated any first-year debater as a novice, gave her the perfect stage for a redemption arc. This time, she didn’t just compete, she dominated. Selena finished as 3rd Best Novice International Speaker out of 169 novices and Best International School Speaker out of 107 school competitors. She came, she saw, she exorcised her multo, and the trophies followed. 🎯

Meanwhile, Shannon drew from her experience as a high school grandfinalist to bring strategy, precision, and flair to the novice stage. Her performance earned her 4th Best Novice International Speaker, proving that experience plus daring equals unstoppable. Shannon didn’t just raise the bar, she set it, proving that championship-level debate is equal parts skill and sparkle.

Congratulations to our trailblazing duo, who have turned school spirit, sweat, and strategy into trophies, titles, and unforgettable moments. BCHS Debate Society has officially arrived on the international stage, and it looks absolutely fabulous. 🌟🎉

✨ Here’s to more history, more firsts, and more sparkle. The world better watch out as you discuss, debate, and dominate!✨

🖤💜✨ A first that changed everything. ✨💜🖤

History was written in bold strokes as Selena Denise Cunanan (Grade 12 HUMSS 1) and Azis Shannon Matnao (Grade 12 HUMSS 3) clinched the very first international break of the Baguio City High School Debate Society—an achievement made even more powerful by the fact that this was their first time ever teaming up.

At Empire IV 2026, against nearly a hundred teams from all over the world, Selena and Shannon rose through the ranks to place 10th overall, carrying BCHS onto the international stage with composure, clarity, and undeniable synergy. What began as a fresh partnership quickly turned into a statement run—fearless, focused, and unforgettable.

Shannon dominated the Novice Category, delivering her highest run to date and earning 5th Best Novice Speaker out of 75 novice speakers, capped with a strong 77.00 average speaker score. A performance marked by confidence and precision, it announced her arrival loud and clear.

Meanwhile, Selena pushed past her national highs and took the leap internationally, finishing as 4th Best Speaker among an impressive 182 speakers, with a remarkable 78.43 average speaker score—her highest run yet, and a testament to growth that refuses to stay within borders.

🖤 First open international break.
💜 First highest runs—for both of them.
✨ First team up.

Gold moments forged in a black-and-purple legacy. Congratulations, Selena and Shannon, for making history together and proving that some partnerships are destined to shine on the world stage. 🏆💜🖤

BCHS Adjudicators did it again. ✨

At the KNAP 3 Asian Parliamentary Debate held last January 10–11, 2026, BCHS proved—once more—that excellence isn’t accidental, it’s a habit.

Breaking into the adjudication rounds were Justine Roczy Estalilla (STEM 4) and Vannah Jolie Trinidad (HUMSS 1), both reaching Open Semifinals as panelists, showing sharp judgment and steady presence on the biggest stages.
Selena Denise Cunanan marked an exciting milestone, grazing the adjudicator pool for the first time and confidently chairing rounds all the way to High School Quarterfinals—a debut worth celebrating.
In a powerful return, Jovhenn Anthony Genove made a massive comeback and soared into the Top 5 Best Adjudicators, while Ismael Alberto (ABM 1) added yet another accolade to his growing record, finishing as the 10th Best Adjudicator overall.

From breakthrough moments to well-earned titles, this run was nothing short of inspiring.
Congratulations to our adjudicators for carrying BCHS with excellence, consistency, and quiet dominance. The bar stays high, because you keep raising it. 💙🏆

🎄✨ BCHS Debate Society spreads holiday cheer with another shining performance! ✨🎄

At the Kamalig North Central Invitationals on December 20–21, 2025, our debaters and adjudicators gave an early gift to BCHS as they competed in the first Asian Parliamentary tournament of the 2025–2026 school year. The event brought together some of the brightest young debaters, and BCHS proudly made its mark.

Selena Cunanan of Baguio City High School teamed up with Jayson Perez of Ilocos Norte National High School and Jovhenn Genove as Team The Harvester and The Farmer’s Daughter, lit up the debate floor like Christmas lights as they broke into the Open Quarterfinals and placing 14th overall.🎁

Meanwhile, Team BCHS Ricky Reunion, composed of Ismael Alberto, Thea Navalta, and Gerald Gamido, proved that dedication and collaboration are the best gifts of all as they secured 15th place in Open breaks and also reached the quarterfinals.💫

BCHS excellence extended beyond the debaters and reached the adjudicating circle as well: Heaven Liquinio, paneled the Open Octofinals, while Vannah Trinidad, shone all the way through the Open Grand Finals. 🌟

As the year comes to a close and the holiday season fills the air with joy, BCHS debaters and adjudicators continue to spread pride, skill, and festive cheer, proving that the true spirit of the season is excellence, teamwork, and celebration. 🥂🎉

Congratulations to all for making BCHS and our partner schools proud!
