Leaving our Mark: Painting a Legacy of Service and Commitment
By: Josh Alquiza
The final deployment day arrived with excitement and a quiet determination fueling us to finish what we started. With a day of hard work behind us, we knew this was it, our final chance, our last opportunity to leave something meaningful behind, a legacy and a symbol to stand for the future generations of what something as small as a single class can achieve when armed with their courage and determination. More than just another day of tasks, today was about completion, of projects, of commitments, and of the experience itself. We set out to wrap things up, not just with material things like paint and supplies, but also with the same energy and purpose that carried us from the very beginning. The morning air was filled with both anticipation and exhaustion, a reminder of how much effort had already been poured into this initiative. Yet, as we gathered for one final push, there was a shared understanding that we would give it our all until the very last moment.
After taking a quick lunch break, eating, enjoying, and preparing for our activities for the day, we returned to the mural, a lasting symbol of the effort poured into this project. What was once left uncompleted from our first visit was now the first thing we tended to, not just to add on or to continue, but this time, for the last time, everyone worked, with their hands holding brushes and their mind set to finish what we had started. Every brushstroke added color not only to the walls, but also to the memories we would take home, with every delicate movement we were building onto piece by piece, a future symbol for the students, and us. The repainting followed, a final touch to ensure that the school stood a little brighter, a little fresher than when we arrived. Something was rewarding about seeing a space transform right before our eyes, knowing that our hands had played a part in that change.
The learning station, which had been taking shape since the first day, finally came together. The last adjustments were made, and with that, another goal was realized. It stood as a quiet reminder of why we were here, to help provide something useful, and something lasting.
We continued the day with the seminar, an opportunity to engage with the students and share valuable knowledge beyond the physical work we had been doing. It was a meaningful exchange, a reminder that education extends far beyond books and classrooms. During which, the President of the UAP – Pangasinan Dagupan Chapter Ar. Ronnie Chua, who has been aiding us since the start of our journey also shared a few quick words and reminders on how to better treat and maintain the school’s facilities. After the end of the program proper, we held the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the newly repaired comfort room and study station. These spaces, once in need of attention, now stood as symbols of the collective effort poured into this project. It was a moment of pride for everyone involved, a tangible representation of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose.
With the projects completed, we shifted focus to the giving of school supplies, the simplest yet perhaps one of the most impactful acts of the day. A reminder that small things, when given with sincerity, can make a real difference in someone’s learning journey. The students received them with eager hands and bright smiles, a reflection of just how much these little things mattered to them. Seeing their joy was enough to reaffirm why we had been working so hard for these two days.
As the day came to a close, so did this chapter of our journey. It wasn’t just about the work we had done, but about the time, the effort, and the teamwork that made it all happen. Nam-ay Eskwela, and 12 STEM I, we should all be proud of what we accomplished. It may not have been perfect, but we gave it our best, and that’s what truly matters. We leave knowing that we did something worthwhile, not just for the school but for ourselves as well. We may not be those amazing heroes in the stories that can magically fix any problems that may arise, but I know that we can all sleep better knowing that we tried our best, we worked our hardest, and we did make a difference, and helped put an aid to diminishing the problems these students face. The experience may be over, but the impact of what we built, painted, and shared will remain. We may be but a graduating class, set to leave in just a few weeks, but on this day, we built something amazing, not something tangible to show, but something that is burned into our hearts, a sign for us to remember what we managed to do when we were together, and a legacy for us to carry as we all made a difference and lit a match to the flame of change in this world.
As we step away from this project and back into our routines, let’s carry this lesson with us, that even the smallest efforts, when done together, can create something greater than ourselves. In the end, service isn’t measured by the size of the work, but by the heart that goes into it. And with that, we move forward, proud, grateful, and ready for whatever comes next. This may be the last step in our advocacy, but hopefully, this will be the first step of ours leading to a bigger change. This is the end, but also the beginning of our journey leading to the path of service, the way to help our community. This is Nam-Ay Eskwela, signing off.
