INVITATION | CONFERENCE ON SEASON OF CREATION

Our Father calls us to accept His love (1 John 4:19). Welcoming that
love as daughters and sons, through a continual conversion of mind
and heart, is our lifelong calling. If we choose to step into the true living
water, we can contribute to a more just and life-giving world for the
entire human family as well as for non-human creation.

Let us overcome our fear and step into the water of Godโ€™s love - to be
part of the River of Transformation for the world, to see the literal
healing and renewal of creation and the blessing of the Earth.

WHEN PEOPLE COME BEFORE PROFIT

When a public official chooses to stand with ordinary people defending their agricultural land against the entry of a mining company, that choice should not be treated as a crime.

A councilor who listens to the people, stands beside farmers, and protects their right to livelihood is doing what public service is supposed to be about: putting people and the common good before profit.

Yet today, this councilor is facing judicial cases and the possibility of arrest.

We must ask: What kind of society are we building when those who defend communities can find themselves facing legal pressure while powerful economic interests continue to pursue access to the land and resources of the people?

To be clear: the councilor is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence. The existence of charges, proceedings, or an arrest does not by itself establish guilt. The courts must be allowed to perform their constitutional role, and all parties must be heard according to law.

At the same time, peaceful criticism of possible political pressure is not a rejection of the rule of law. We can respect judicial processes while also asking whether public officials and community advocates are being treated fairly and whether the law is being applied equally to everyone.

This is not about being against development. It is about asking: development for whom, and at whose expense?

Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Siโ€™ that the earth is our common home and that environmental degradation cannot be separated from the suffering of vulnerable communities. The cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are deeply connected.

ยซโ€œThe earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor.โ€ยป

Laudato Siโ€™ also calls us to place the common good at the center of public life. When agricultural land is at stake, we are not talking only about soil and minerals. We are talking about food, livelihood, culture, community, and the future of generations yet to come.

May we have more public servants who have the courage to stand with their constituents even when doing so is difficult.

And may our institutions never become instruments for silencing those who defend the common good.

Good governance is not measured by how well we protect investments alone, but by how faithfully we protect people, communities, creation, and future generations.

Let the courts do their work.
Let due process prevail.
Let the people be heard.
Let the farmers be protected.
And let those in power remember that public office is ultimately a responsibility to the peopleโ€”not merely to profit or powerful interests.

Laudato Siโ€™ โ€” Praise Be to You.

ANNOUNCING THE COMBINED SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

LIVING WATER: IMMERSION IN LIVING WATER
Ezekiel 47 : 9, 12

๐Ÿ“… September 1 โ€“ October 4, 2026
๐ŸŒฟ Extending into October for Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Month and Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day

We are pleased to share the Combined Schedule of Activities for the Season of Creation 2026 in Baguio and the Cordillera!

This year, we are invited to enter more deeply into the reality of Living Waterโ€”to immerse ourselves in the waters that sustain life, in the beauty and fragility of Creation, and in our shared responsibility to care for our rivers, springs, watersheds, forests, and communities.

The 2026 celebration is especially meaningful as we commemorate the 800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi (1226โ€“2026). His love for Creation and his praise of โ€œSister Waterโ€ in the Canticle of the Creatures invite us to rediscover water not simply as a resource, but as a sacred gift and part of the community of Creation.

Our celebration will also extend into Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Month, recognizing Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards and guardians of Creation. Their knowledge, spirituality, and traditional practices remind us of the profound relationship between land, water, people, and all living beings.

๐Ÿ“Œ CHECK OUT THE COMBINED SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES BELOW!

Join us in a season of prayer, learning, dialogue, creativity, celebration, and action as we immerse ourselves in Living Water and deepen our commitment to care for our Common Home.

๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฟ Let us immerse ourselves in Living Water.
Let us rediscover our relationship with Creation.
Let us move from appreciation to action.

KASIBU, NUEVA VIZCAYA โ€” 11 September 2026. The Diocese of Baguio, through its Commission on Environment, Social Action Commission, and the Clergy, undertook Lakbay-Pakikiisa sa Kasibu, a pastoral journey of listening, accompaniment, solidarity, and dialogue with communities concerned about mining and other development activities affecting their land and communities.

The visit was undertaken in coordination with the Diocese of Bayombong and communities in Kasibu. The delegation was welcomed, briefed, and facilitated by Rev. Fr. Cris Costales, Vicar Forane of the Diocese of Bayombong, as the group proceeded to the communities to listen to their experiences and concerns.

The Diocese of Baguio delegation was composed of Rev. Fr. Mario E. Tambic, Director of the Commission on Environment; Hector Kawig, Commission on Environment Coordinator; Letty Bueno, Social Action Commission staff; Rev. Fr. Rizal Wales, Director/Economos of the Finance Department; Jason Gabuyo, Finance Department staff; Tiong Dennis, Yana, and Larry of DZWT 540 Radio Totoo News and Information; and Rev. Fr. Nelson Domerez, Parish Priest of the Conversion of St. Paul Parish in Sayangan.

Following a dialogue with the local parish, the delegation proceeded to Barangay Paquet, where residents have been maintaining a human barricade in opposition to the entry of fuel and supplies to Northern Luzon Mining and Resources Corporation (NLMRC)'s gold and copper exploration site.

The visit came in the wake of a police clearing operation at the barricade in late August. Reports said that 11 residentsโ€”eight men and three women from the villages of Paquet, Dine, and Catarawanโ€”were arrested and faced charges of grave coercion and resistance and disobedience. Two people were also reported to have sustained injuries during the police intervention. The 11 residents were subsequently released on bail on September 1, 2026, following appeals for financial assistance from the community and their supporters.

At the barricade area, the delegation witnessed the difficult conditions that residents continue to endure as they remain in the area to make their concerns heard. Their presence at the barricade reflects the community's continuing effort to seek dialogue and to call attention to their concerns over mining activities in their area.

The barricaders expressed gratitude that support and assistance are coming from different organizations and individuals, including the Church. For the residents, these expressions of solidarity provide encouragement as they continue to face the difficulties and uncertainties surrounding their struggle.

As a concrete expression of solidarity, the Diocese of Baguio extended financial assistance to the residents, officers, and treasurer who are maintaining the barricade. The assistance was turned over by Rev. Fr. Mario E. Tambic, Rev. Fr. Rizal Wales, and Rev. Fr. Nelson Domerez.

More than a visit, Lakbay-Pakikiisa sa Kasibu is an expression of the Church's commitment to listen, accompany, and walk with communities facing environmental and social concerns. It is an opportunity for the Diocese of Baguio to learn from the experiences of the people and to deepen its understanding of the realities faced by communities whose lives, livelihoods, and future are closely connected to the land.

The Diocese recognizes that care for our common home is inseparable from listening to the people who live in and depend upon it. Through dialogue, pastoral accompaniment, and solidarity, the Church continues to walk with communities in their search for justice, peace, and the protection of life and creation.

Land is Life.
