Bilang dating Justice Secretary at ipinakulong noon dahil sa imbentong mga kaso na batay lang sa mga gawa-gawang paratang, malinaw na ang pagsisinungaling sa korte ay pagwasak sa integridad ng ating sistemang pangkatarungan.

This has to end. Those responsible for this travesty of justice should be held accountable.

One of our priority bills is House Bill No. 1435 or “Criminalizing Subornation of Perjury Act”. Under our proposed measure, public officials or employees who commit subornation of perjury face higher penalties and perpetual disqualification from holding public office or employment.

Napag-aralan namin siya noong Grade 4. Nai-imagine niyo bang may p**i o muwang ang batang nasa grade 4 sa Civics at pagka-martyr ni Ninoy?

Sa pagtanda ko, sa pag-consume ko ng media, sa mga random thoughts ko ng 2am, madami akong napapag-aralan sa kaniya. Oo, naging senador siya, asawa niya si Cory, tatay siya ng nakaupong presidente noon. Pero, ang nakakaintriga, nakapunta siya ng U.S. pero piniling umuwi sa Pinas and for what? Mamolitika? Because the “Filipino is worth dying for”?

THE U.S. of A? Land of Freedom? Land of McDo and Hollywood? Bakit niya piniling umuwi eh kamatayan lang nag-aantay sa kaniya dito sa ilalim ng “Bagong Lipunan”, as DepEd apparently calls it? Pwede naman siyang manahimik na lang at i-enjoy buhay niya kasama asawa’t mga anak niya doon. Was love for family not enough?
Or perhaps, it was just that. Love. Corny pag iisipin, pero it is “that deep”. Love for mankind (sa pamamagitan ng mga polisiya at aksyon niya), peace and prosperity (see peace talks with Luis Taruc), and country: sa pagbalik ng Pilipinas dahil hinahanap siya ng mga kababayan niya sa kalagitnaan ng isa sa mga pinakamadilim na parte ng ating kasaysayan. Sa mga huling oras niya, alam niyang papatayin siya: at tanggap niya iyon. Hindi dahil pagod na siyang mabuhay pero dahil punong-puno siya nito.
Pa-trenta na ako. Wala ako noong panahong iyon. Nasa 2026 ako. Dito ko lang na-appreciate ang mga napag-aralan ko sa Sibika. Dito ko lang napag-tanto na tama nga sila. Sa koloniyalismo, sa pwedeng mangyaring kasakiman ng mga nakaupo, sa pag-asa ng maliwanag na kinabukasan ng bansa, at sa sobrang pagmamahal mo sa kapwa mo na pinipili mong tulungan kahit hindi kayo magka-ayos, magkakilala, o magkapiling.

“Ako ang Simula ng Pagbabago” ay isa sa mga naaalala kong essay na pinapasulat noong Grade 5 o 6 sa amin. Probably naitapon na iyon ng teacher namin, I can’t help but think of what I wrote on it.

Ninoy Aquino is not a hero. He is not a saint nor a messiah.

Ninoy Aquino is a beacon of hope, a warrior of truth, and a flame for the future. Because of his integrity and courage, he stood for our country. His life and sacrifice became a spark for a collective awakening that moved Filipinos to stand up against fear and fight for the rights of the Filipino people.

Many of us today have been eaten by misinformation, but we cannot erase the fact that he stood for a peaceful revolution that helped awaken our democratic institutions. This should not be forgotten, as we continue to believe that we deserve better for our people. He had been exiled for years, but his fight for us did not end—and we should not get tired of continuing that fight as well.

In this generation, I still believe in what he said, “The Filipino is worth dying for.” It is. Because we are just eaten by a broken system made by corrupt politicians. I still believe that Filipinos have pure hearts and a sense of fairness for each and everyone.

This is not just about being Ninoy as a politician, but about how he served as a public servant and how he loved our country. We must follow his integrity and love for the country, as we believe we can achieve a better life for us and for the future.

And this is how I remember Ninoy today.

In today's commemoration, one realizes that the killing of Ninoy Aquino is not what he represented. An example of a true Filipino who stood by his principles is what he embodied in his lifetime. The sacrifice he made raises a question, which remains unsolved until today. If death were to come knocking on my door, would I be able to step barefoot, as he did, not as a martyr, but as a proud Filipino who stood by his principles. After all, our country suffers from corruption, poverty, injustice, lies, divides, and power abuse, and patriotism has to be manifested in action, regardless of the consequences, by speaking up for those who cannot do it themselves.

Perhaps the question is not whether I would be willing to die for the country, but rather whether I would be willing to live for it – to live with courage, with honor, with purpose, with love for our country and its people, and to speak up and out for the truth, however painful it might be. To stand up to those who would abuse their power and misdirect the people; to do whatever is necessary so that the Philippines and its people may flourish.

And when my final hour comes and death is waiting for me at my doorsteps, I hope that I shall be able to face it without shame and without regret; that I have not stood silently by while my country cried out; that I have never faltered in my duty; that I have never been blind about what was right and what was wrong; and that I have not lived for myself but for something bigger than myself. If my death should come soon, may it not be in vain, for the betterment of my people.

In all honesty, back in my elementary days, I spent little to no time contemplating Ninoy Aquino Day. I gave no real thought to its history or how it might connect to my reality then. I vaguely recall my teachers briefly mentioning his assassination at the Manila International Airport after returning from exile, though to be completely fair, I was probably just spacing out or doodling dragons on my textbook.

It wasn't until high school that an ounce of curiosity nudged me to dig deeper into Philippine political history, especially Martial Law and the oppression it birthed—scars that linger to this day. During that era, Ninoy was one of the few who stood and dared to speak truth to power, fully knowing the cost.

What struck me most was that his death was not merely a tragic accident—it was a conscious risk he willingly faced. As he famously said, "The Filipino is worth dying for." Those words were not just rhetoric; they were a deliberate trade of his life for the future of Philippine democracy.

Since then, I no longer see this holiday as just an excuse for a day off school to laze around. It is a sobering reminder that freedom is never free, and that we, the youth, must prove that Filipinos are worth living and fighting for, too.

Personally, I see indifference and ignorance as our greatest foes in shaping our nation for the greater good. Ninoy himself said, "I will never forgive myself if I live with the knowledge that I could have done something—and yet did nothing." These are words that challenge us to move beyond apathy and complacency. It doesn't have to take a bullet to make change. Though it demands that we stay informed and that we use our voices to shape our nation. Because if we remain silent and indifferent, then his sacrifice and the heroes before him—and the freedom it brought forth—will have been in vain.

Ninoy Aquino once said, “I have carefully weighed the virtues and the faults of the Filipino and I have come to the conclusion that he is worth dying for because he is the nation’s greatest untapped resource.” For me, these words really hit differently, especially as a volunteer.

In times like this, I also find myself asking, “Yung mga ginagawa ko ba, worth it ba talaga?” There are days when the challenges and struggles make me question if my efforts are actually making a difference. Minsan nakakapagod din, and you wonder if what you’re doing really matters.

But remembering Ninoy reminds me that serving our country doesn’t always have to be something big or extraordinary. Sometimes, it’s simply choosing to show up, to help, and to continue serving kahit mahirap. As volunteers, we may not always see the impact of what we do right away, but every small effort still contributes to something bigger.

As we remember Ninoy and his sacrifice, we also remember why we continue to fight despite the challenges we experience every day. My Filipino spirit is still alive. Siguro, that is what keeps me going, the belief that there is still something worth fighting for and something worth doing for our country.

At the end of the day, I may still question if what I do is worth it. But I choose to continue. Kasi kung may maliit man akong contribution para sa kapwa at sa bayan, para sa akin, worth it pa rin.

Remembering Ninoy🎗

Decades after his death, Ninoy Aquino remains a beacon of courage, heroism, and an indomitable spirit in fighting for justice and democracy.

Sa panahon ng disinformation, historical revisionism, propaganda, katiwalian at iba’t ibang hamon sa pagtataguyod ng katotohanan at pananagutan, napakahalaga na balikan at lalo na, maipagpatuloy, ang paninindigan ni Ninoy – isang pinuno at lingkod-bayang hindi nanahimik, hindi nagwalang kibo, at hanggang sa huli, tumindig para sa tama at makatarungan.

Patuloy nating ip**ita – ngayon, bukas at palagi – ang Pilipino at ang Pilipinas ay karapat-dapat ipaglaban at matamasa ang tunay na hustisya at demokrasya. 🇵🇭✊🏼
