Season of Creation 2025 Culminates at Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary with Shared Reflections

The Season of Creation is observed every year from September 1 to October 4 by churches, faith-based groups, and environmental advocates.

Furthermore, this is a time set aside for prayer, reflection, and collective action to care for our common home, EARTH.

In Baguio City, the Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary (MES) has become a natural home for these activities. With its 2.8-hectare grounds, focus on ecological spirituality, and strong partnerships with groups that uphold indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship, MES was one of the avenues where people come together to reflect, learn, and act for creation.

The Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary (MES) was one of the organizations that organized these activities in the City of Baguio to promote ecological spirituality.

Several organizations gathered at MES for a culminating program. Participants came from Partners for Indigenous Knowledge Philippines (PIKP), IGOROTA Foundation Inc. (IFI), Baeng Network Group, Association of Consecrated Women Baguio-Benguet (ACWBB), and Climate Change and Indigenous Spirituality. Each group shared insights and recapped the activities they held during the previous weeks.

During the testimonies and sharing, Jeanira Okubo, IGOROTA Foundation Inc., said that, โ€œYou are part of the land, and the land is part of you,โ€ stressing the need to protect the environment for future generations.

A liturgical mass followed, led by Fr. Marion Nebres. After that, some participants walked through the sanctuary grounds as part of a Cosmic Journey, this is a reflective activity that shows the interconnectedness of life and the need to protect what sustains communities.

IGOROTA Foundation Inc. Joins CSO Meeting, Gains Seat in Municipal Peoples Council

KIBUNGAN, Benguet โ€” IGOROTA Foundation Inc. (IFI) participated in the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) meeting held at the Town Hall in Poblacion, Kibungan, Benguet on September 26, 2025.

IGOROTA Foundation Inc. was one of the accredited CSOs, alongside 65 other organizations that are actively operating in the Municipality of Kibungan.

During the meeting, Laurence Toking, Vice Mayor, stressed the value of accreditation, noting that recognized and accredited CSOs may access support from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) for livelihood programs. He added that CSOs contribute to good governance by helping monitor projects implemented in Kibungan.

This was reaffirmed by Jonilou F. Sahoy, Municipal Local Government Operations Officer (MLGOO), who stated that CSOs act as a bridge between the government and the private sector, enabling cooperation in various development projects in Kibungan. According to Sahoy, active citizen participation strengthens transparency and accountability in local governance.

Furthermore, Agusta Dayao, CSO Desk Officer, shared that there are other organizations that are recognized by the LGU and encouraged them to apply for accreditation.

Frenzylle B. Bulawan, Municipal Secretary, relayed Mayor Agustin J. Telloโ€™s support for community-based initiatives, encouraging citizens to raise concerns directly to officials as partners in solving problems, rather than as critics. She said the administration aims to promote community empowerment through shared responsibility.

Meanwhile, Ronalyn Butil, Executive Officer of IFI, was elected as Vice Chairman of the Municipal Peopleโ€™s Council.

Tacadang, Kibungan, Benguet โ€” During a recent visit, the IGOROTA Foundation Inc. (IFI) observed how farmers in Tacadang continue to practice intercropping in their ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ-๐˜ข (garden). Crops such as sugarcane, cassava, camote, pineapple, squash, gabi, watercress, and ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด (legumes) are grown together on the same plots of land.

This method helps maximize the small areas of land, which can improve soil health, prevent pests naturally, and help farmers secure a different food supply.

Their ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ-๐˜ข show indigenous knowledge and values of sustainability and resourcefulness.

The project is being piloted for a span of one year at Barangay Bakakeng Crystal Cave, Baguio City, to promote sustainable practices and shift communities from a linear to a circular economy.

IFI introduced ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ช: Toward a Circular Economy to partner organizations, government agencies, and community groups, discussing the importance of integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) with modern environmental management strategies.

The project includes capacity building, intergenerational learning exchanges, and the indigenization of circular economy education materials by involving women, elders, teachers, barangay officials, and youth.

One of the outputs of this project is to instill awareness and strengthen behavioral change towards sustainable living in the City of Baguio.

This project is funded by the European Union-Philippines Green Economy Partnership and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of its commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the City of Baguio.

Meanwhile, IFI displayed some of local product like polvuron and knowledge materials like posters, magazines, and books.

HER-STORY

Three daring women saw a star that would lead to them to dream dream and see visions. These women invited other women to join them in the vision that they foresaw. Igorota Foundation was born as a result of brainstorming activities between women who conceived the idea of a foundation whose primary concern will be Cordillera womenโ€™s upliftment and well-being. Today, her vision for the Igorot women has become clearer, tested by positive achievements and negative experiences.
