๐Ÿฝ๏ธโœจ From shared plates to shared perspectivesโ€”Hiraya Sessions brought conversations diplomacy to life.

What started as simple exchanges over food became meaningful discussions on culture, identity, and global connections, proving that diplomacy can thrive even in the most informal spaces. Thank you to everyone who joined, shared their insights (and snacks!), and helped create an environment that was not only engaging but genuinely warm and inclusive. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅข

Your stories, perspectives, and openness turned this session into more than just a dialogueโ€”it became a shared experience of learning and connection.

๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿค Hereโ€™s to more conversations that connect cultures, spark ideas, and build bridgesโ€”one bite at a time

We, the UPB LEADS, an organization defined by our commitment to independent inquiry and the nurturing of diplomatic rhetoric and excellence, aims to provide an analysis that tackles every facet of this enduring friction. Furthermore, as a community of scholars dedicated to the search for truth and the development of future leaders, our organization rejects the reductive binaries that obscure the realities of modern conflict. We recognize that diplomacy is an important part that calls for our active participation as students to ensure that the failures and shortcomings of the past do not dictate our global future.

Philippines, in comparison with other long-colonized countries such as India and Indonesia, similarly traversed through colonial experiences, and although its lasting impacts remain, these countries have developed a sense of nationalism found in their social and economic power (e.g. OFWs for Philippines, Bollywood for India, spice exports for Indonesia). This now intertwines with Homi Bhabha's concept of hybridity, wherein the fusion of cultures through colonization makes it possible for these colonized countries to adopt but also resist impending colonial influence, given the new set of cultures they have (Saadi, 2025). While dominant countries shifted global landscapes and imposed authority, the victimization of colonized countries with disrupted histories can outturn colonial experience into utilizing local resources or the surplus it benefits them, hence, the โ€œmimic manโ€ concept denoting the reversal of social roles and power with evolutions of historical trauma and resistance.

One of these countries, Australia, offers scholarships geared toward students from ASEAN, such as that of โ€˜Australia for ASEAN Scholarships,โ€™ โ€˜Australia Awards Scholarships,โ€™ and โ€˜Australia Awards Fellowships.โ€™ All of these scholarships ameliorate the problem of education access by alleviating the burden of ASEAN member states while at the same time offering avenues where their own citizens might be able to give back to their communities. However, while the positive effects of international scholarships are undeniable, one cannot help but posit the following question:

What gains would countries like Australia get from using their own resources for those outside their borders? What does it do for them in the context of international politics?

Series #1, Issue #1

Entering a political environment distinctly marked by its bipartisan support for free trade, multilateralism, and American soft power, Trumpโ€™s tirades against the established international order opened a serious inquiry into the U.S.โ€™s role as leader of the free world. While he mostly failed to establish enduring foreign policies in his first term as president (2017 to 2021), his second term (2025-2029) has more effectively transformed his decade-long campaign rebuttals into enduring tenets of his legacy: imposing tariffs, structurally alienating the U.S.โ€™s traditional allies, and scaling back the countryโ€™s foreign responsibilities. This therefore puts the U.S. in a precarious situation, as Trumpโ€™s actions may permanently disrupt the established international system, accelerating the prominence of a multipolar world order endangering nations and institutions alike.
