Filipino Christmas is traditionally happy. It is a season where families gather to cherish peace and warmth, unwrapping gifts thoughtfully chosen to match the needs or personalities of their recipients. Christmas songs play endlessly through loudspeakers, often brought home by a father or an uncle. And a table filled with hearty dishes carefully prepared for noche buena. These are the scenes we are expecting every December.

As familiar as these celebrations are, a different Christmas quietly unfolds across the street. There are those who long to know what a real Christmas feels like, forced to treat this special day as an ordinary one. A day spent praying for a miracle, listening blankly to the cheerful noise outside their homes. Christmas may be a special day, but it is not the same for everyone.

This is the issue that most of us are blind to. The joy we experience during this season often covers our sight, blinding us to the scraps and dirt that still exist on Christmas Day. I used to think that it was oneโ€™s own fault if they could not find the Christmas spirit, because I formerly believed that happiness was innate on this day. But the distress that existed before the joy will never be extinguished just because it is Christmas. Many may choose the bliss of ignorance, but this choice is a disservice to those who continue to struggle in the background.

Christmas is joyful, but the common Filipino still struggles to survive each day under a failing system. Christmas is the season of unending laughter, yet a mother still cries because she cannot give her children the celebration they deserve. Christmas is hope, but many Filipinos remain helpless amid corruption that remains unresolved.

This inequality is not merely incidental no matter how easily we are tempted to believe it is. Believe me or not, everyone works until their body tires out just to prepare a memorable Christmas. I even heard back then that a parent of one of my childhood friends needed to prepare a Christmas carol performance just to receive his Christmas bonus. Astonishingly, the extra money given is still insufficient to feed their family of five. Truly, it is not โ€œkatamaranโ€ or โ€œkawalan ng diskarteโ€ which makes some Christmas celebrations unfulfilling, it is the unfair circumstances that are served with unaddressed handicaps.

It does not matter how hard you give your best especially if the state consistently neglects our security. It is a government of manipulators who chooses to enact inadequate minimum wages, therefore limiting its people's joy and comfort. Intended or not, they push laborers to go beyond to afford even the basic needs. Most workers are forced to identify survival for success, and exhaustion for virtue. We applaud their grit while ignoring the systems that drained them in the first place. The state praises โ€œhard workโ€ yet refuses to make work livable, leaving people to hustle themselves with double jobs or other means just to stay afloat.

Those who have almost nothing are left clinging to whatever the season offers. For them, Christmas does not mean a table full of food, but it is with packs of instant noodles, canned goods, and biscuits handed out by the government, presented as if these were enough to carry them through the holidays. Out of desperation, they learn to treat these as pamasko, eager to taste even a speck of the joy that everyone else seems to find so naturally. It is cruel that a season meant for abundance teaches the poorest to search for happiness in something so small.

This is the reality that most Filipinos face. It may feel out of place to name all these wrongs on a day meant for celebration, yet it is precisely because it is Christmas that we must. Because when joy is expected but dignity is denied, the season becomes not a promise, but a reminder of everything the state has failed to protect. And perhaps the most painful truth is this, in a country that prides itself on being happy, many are left wondering why Christmas still feels empty.

I still wish everyone a Merry Christmas. But perhaps the only gift we can offer to those who are struggling is not forced cheers, not greetings, but the simple act of recognizing their stolen dignity.

Noche Buena is a Pinoy commodity. Every year, Filipinos allocate most of their bonuses and salaries to put on the greatest meal that their family will have for the year. Filipinos believe that Jesusโ€™ birthday must be celebrated, and as a Christian country, His birth is considered a blessing. Yet, with the recent remarks of a government official, one must ask: how can a Filipino family prepare a feast for the Son of God with a single yellow peso bill?

Last November 27, the Department of Trade and Industries issued a controversial take on the needed amount for preparing your Noche Buena. They stated that with 500 pesos, a Filipino family can curate a decent feast for Christmas. This take gathered a massive flak online mentioning that this statement came from an incognizant perspective of existing realities.

To be fair, it is factual that you can prepare a simpleng handaan for the price mentioned. The cheapest ham I know costs 107 pesosโ€”but be warned, it is not the round delectable ham we see in a Christmas advertisement. Palengke style pasta noodles cost nearly 60 pesos per pack, but the texture will surely be mushy. With the limited budget, you can not go for ground beef or pork as sahog, opt for the cheapest corned beef available. Do not even raise your ambitions for a tomato spaghetti sauce, a pack of banana ketchup is enough. For fruit salad, buy the smallest fruit cocktail you can find, then go for one no-name brand cream that may be lardyโ€”but who cares? This is the feast you can afford, it is not much, but it feeds a growling stomach right? In Filipino terms we say โ€œmakuntento na muna,โ€ make do of what is on the table.

The anger did not come from a simple rage because of the statementโ€™s absurdity, rather, it is because it breeds a dangerous norm that the government wants to instillโ€”be grateful for the crumbs that you get.

Filipinos have been conditioned with the pagtiyatiyaga attitude. This long tradition has masked the governmentโ€™s failure to pass policies that could ease the lives of ordinary Filipinos. We were taught to be like Lazarus, who is grateful for each scraps of food he receives since this made him enter Heaven. The institutions that shape the daily life of a Filipino have sealed this toxic mindset as a virtue.

The statement reverberated the humungous distance of power between the wealthy and the working class. The institutionalization of this attitude draws the common Filipino further from aiming to afford luxury, because this vantage point clearly makes them believe that simplicity is some sort of riches to own, making them think a simple feast for Christmas is enough.

This is what happens when those on top want you to believe that you only deserve to settle.

That single yellow peso bill will feel enough at some point, but joy should never demand that you give up your dignity or compromise for less than what you truly wantโ€”not even in a season of generosity and abundance. The spirit of Christmas revolves around giving out happiness and hoping for change. This retention of the rugged lifestyle that most Filipinos are tired of does not align with the calls of this holiday. The birth of Jesus Christ is a symbol of hope for humanity and care of who is above us.

A line in the bible explicitly states that โ€œFor God so loved the world, He gave us His only Son.โ€ We can see that a leader that truly cares carries out physical manifestations of love, they do not imply that we do not need more. I wonder, when can we ever say โ€œFor the government loves as it gave us care?โ€

Just an advice to those in power (if they ever plan to give care at all): having a realistic take may be a good start.

Students across the University of the Cordilleras have taken their stand last November 18.
They took part in the Baguio-Benguet Walkout, a collective action calling out corruption and demanding accountability from public officials. UC students stepped outside their classrooms to take part in this organized movement.

2016 marked the beginning of a bloody chapter for student activism in the post-Marcos modern democratic era. According to Inquirer, the 2022 report of the International Commission of Jurists, โ€œDanger in Dissent: Counterterrorism and Human Rights in the Philippines,โ€ highlighted that red-tagging can be deadly, with several individuals killed after being publicly labeled as rebels or terrorists. This figure excludes the unrecorded violence linked to activism and the countless victims of the brutal war on drugs. Human-rights organizations such as Karapatan and Global Witness report that more than 420โ€“430 political activists and human-rights defenders were killed under the Duterte administration. In response to the calls for justice, accountability, and transparency amid rampant corruption and the drug warโ€™s bloodshed, student activists were dealt with bullets and later officially branded as insurgents through the pen.

The effects were swift, as waves of fear struck the hearts of parents sending their children to school. These fears varied depending on the propaganda at play: the fear that their children might become โ€œarmed communists,โ€ or the fear for their safety as they fought for what is rightโ€”a fear rooted in genuine concern. But for the administration during those times (and for its ever-robust fanatics), there was no difference; the truth didnโ€™t matter. Only power did. Any challenge to their legitimacy and political longevity was a threat. Violence would be served nonetheless.

When the May 2022 elections arrived, passions collided, and the deafening voices of the youth resonated heavily across the nation. Yet it became an unfortunate moment where preparation didnโ€™t meet opportunity. Power was so intoxicating that the solid machinery built on deceit and evil echoed more strongly in the meekest hearts of Filipinos. Passions were crushed, and hearts were deeply broken.

But come the 2025 midterm elections, the tide turned once more, as 28.11 million young registered voters showed up to fill the congressional seats with competent technocrats who upheld integrity. Bam Aquino placed second in the senatorial race, while Kiko Pangilinan secured fifth. Chel Diokno and Leila de Lima also won seats in the lower house. Several candidates from the Makabayan bloc found success in the 2025 electionsโ€”an electoral miracle no one had foreseen.

Despite the forces of evil still gripping power, hope hangs in the balance, where justice and truth barely cling to life, yet refuse to be crushed into silence. The youth are here, and they are angry.

November 18, 2025, will be remembered as the day when the youth once again stood up against the forces of evilโ€”๐˜ฎ๐˜จ๐˜ข ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ฏ. An astounding gathering of 5,000 scholars from universities across Baguioโ€“Benguet coalesced in Malcolm Square, carrying a rallying cry against corruption and for academic freedom. It was a movement that underscored the vital role of academic institutions in molding young minds toward the truth and in preserving the legacies of our national heroes who died for the same causeโ€”only now, the stakes are much higher. An academic lens that cuts through biases, propaganda, and the overwhelming lies and political distractions that pull us further from reality. A framework that protects the delicate balance between academics and activism. The values of radical reform and an evolving understanding of what an effective revolution requires. These are the very institutions that arm us with the tools necessary to bring forth the true liberation of our nation from the wickedโ€”the ones unworthy of being mourned.

The spirit of student participation filled the streets of Baguio City as various universities across the City of Pines showed off their guts to reprimand the unresolved corruption anomalies at the Baguio-Benguet International Students Day Walkout, this afternoon.

A 5,000-strong turnout from Benguet State University, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, and University of the Philippinesโ€“Baguio packed Malcolm Square where thunderous chants for transparency and accountability roared in solidarity.

This shows that the youth is tired of the same broken system that runs deep into the halls of our dysfunctional government. The walkout is a show of dismay, but more importantly, it reassures that the voice of the youth counts significantly in shaping and fixing of the flawed establishment that our country runs on.
