𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆: 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗼𝗰 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻

Family members, friends, students, colleagues, and loved ones of the late Dr. John Anthony A. Domantay, PhD, gathered today, May 22, at the SLU Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Parish for a Mass celebrating his life and legacy.

Dr. Domantay served as the Dean of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine (SLU-SOM) for 19 years until his passing on May 19.

Following the Mass, his remains will return to St. Peter Memorial Chapel along Marcos Highway, Baguio City, before being brought to Dagupan on May 23. He will be laid to rest on May 25, 2026.

During the Mass, Rev. Fr. Gilbert Sales, CICM, recognized the invaluable contributions Doc John made to the University and the countless lives he touched throughout his years of service.

“Beyond the achievements and recognitions, what made Doc John truly exceptional was the way he touched lives… I, together with his students, admired him not only for his brilliance, but also for his ability to teach with clarity, simplicity, and wisdom,” he said.

“Doc John had finished his work on Earth. The teacher now rests, the dean now rests, the mentor now rests, but the lives he formed, the wisdom he shared, the goodness he planted in this institution, will continue to live on for generations,” Fr. Sales declared.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐀. 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐲, Dean of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine (SLU SOM), whose distinguished leadership strengthened medical education and whose profound commitment to our students, faculty, and community touched so many. More than an exceptional leader, he was a 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿, a 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, and a 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Our thoughts and prayers of strength are with Dr. John’s family, loved ones, and all who had the opportunity to know him. May they find comfort in the memories of Dr. John’s gracious life.

𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙍𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙀𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙮

— 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙤 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚. This was the most important lesson for SLU-MLS Alumni 𝗠𝘀. 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗗. 𝗔𝗹𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮, 𝗥𝗠𝗧, Batch of 2016, on her journey as a student, and the life learning, successes and challenges that came with it.

Ms. Alcantara’s story is lined with 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. As a freshman student, she chose to let go of her love for student-athleticism to focus on her studies, and during the pandemic, she continually pursued different roles in the healthcare sector, to continue to leave an impact on her community. Now, as a seasoned registered Medical Technologist, her definition of success has transformed past grades, achievement, or recognition, but rather a personal fulfillment, and accomplishment of peace.

Ms. Allison stresses that though the MLS journey is filled with bumps, crossroads, and times where sacrifice is needed, one must always leave time and love for themselves, the people, and the things around them, and that a career is simply one part of a whole, and not all encompassing.

For future SLU-RMTs, she leaves these finals words of advice:
“𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂. Just by choosing to begin this lifelong journey, you’ve already done something remarkable. Thank you for choosing Medical Laboratory Science as your career path. In the real world, our profession may not always be the most visible or recognized, but every new student and future professional like you helps bring honor and awareness to what we do.
As you move forward, I hope compassion always leads, a genuine desire to serve, and a deep love for the profession. These are what will truly define you, beyond any title. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.”

May Ms. Allison’s story remind future SLU-RMTs that every challenge is a testament to their strength, and every step forward counts. As she describes her own journey “It’s challenging yet fulfilling.” 💜💛

We are 3rd year students from the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program conducting a study entitled:
