Once, a man entered the Masjid during the Friday Khutbah.
The Prophet ﷺ asked him to pray two Rak’ahs... and this happened for three consecutive Fridays.
On the third Friday, he ﷺ also instructed the people to give in charity during the Khutbah.🌱
When they did, the Prophet ﷺ gave the man two garments from the charity… and said again:
“Give in charity.”
The man immediately threw one of the garments into the collection.💰
The Prophet ﷺ then addressed the companions:
“Have you not seen this man?
He entered the Masjid in scruffy clothes and I hoped that you would notice him, and give charity to him, but you did not do that, So I said, 'Give in charity.'”
Then he ﷺ rebuked the man who had given away one of the garments, handing it back to him.
(Sunan an-Nasa'i 2536)
This incident holds very important lessons for us:
📌 First: Muslims have a responsibility to look out for and support those in need.
We shouldn’t wait for someone to ask when we can clearly see they need help.
📌 Second: The rewards of charity are immense, but we shouldn’t give away what’s essential to our own well-being.
The man had just received new clothes for a reason.
Giving away his only provision would have cost him his dignity and necessities, making him needy again.
