To some people, the 27th of April might have been a regular Saturday, but to Akap Arapaap, that day was certainly one to remember. At seven oโclock that morning, the team traveled to Camp 7 Elementary School more than ready to contribute to the knowledge of the schoolโs sixth graders. It took some time from their arrival and setting up to familiarize themselves with the new faces. However, with the opening remarks and prayer delivered, the introduction to the members of the advocacy broke the ice between the seniors in high school and the students in middle school. This signaled the start of a productive day filled with new things learned and new friends made.
To officially begin the literacy portion of the set of activities planned, the group held the Mystery Story Quiz wherein the students had to chronologically arrange the events of the story read to them and answer questions involving its main components. Amidst the timer and the specific questions, they were able to perform well and exhibit their firm grasp of the story. Next, they played Vest in Spelling wherein they were given a word to spell using the letters on the front and back parts of the vests worn by their classmates. Between this game and the previous one, this one was enjoyed the most as students expressed how they were fond of spelling. Before using the remaining words in the list, the students had their recess to energize themselves for the gameโs continuation. After finishing the literacy portion, the group moved on to the numeracy portion with Spin-the-Math, a game driven by either fortune or misfortune as the kids had to spin the wheel to see which math concept they had to apply. Much like a lot of people, the kids did not show as much eagerness for math. However, after a quick lesson on graphing, their enthusiasm returned as a lot of hands simultaneously shot up to volunteer to plot the given points on the board. To finish the set of activities, they played Tic-tac-toe with a twist. Before they could place their pieces, they had to answer a math question correctly. Overall, the games all involving the class being split into groups of two truly showed the studentsโ general willingness to learn and cooperate as well as their exhibition of good sportsmanship.
To conclude the program, Akap Arapaap distributed certificates and tokens to the teachers and students along with four new electric fans to add to the classroom. All in all, the experience was memorable and fulfilling as the group gained new perspectives and life lessons. The advocacy recognizes that they cannot make nationwide change in the blink of an eye. However, we all start somewhere. For Akap Arapaap, it was Camp 7 Elementary School and its staff and students. Their determination to collaborate with the team and give them a chance to prove what they could do was what paved the way for the groupโs journey of reinventing learning. Beyond that, the group acknowledges the continuous support from their parents, sponsors, and immersion adviser Sir Nelwyn Tejada. Without them, Akap Arapaap would not be as successful in its advocacy as it is today.๐๐ฉโ๐ซโ๏ธ
