ILLEGAL V**E SELLING - V**e products with an estimated value of P145,000 were confiscated from three stalls at the Maharlika Livelihood Center during a surprise inspection by the Smoke Free Task Force and the Maharlika Livelihood Center Administration today, April 13.

Following reports received from parents who caught their children va**ng, along with several reports received from this page, an inspection team led by the Enviromental Health and Sanitation Division and the MLC Administration verified the said reports.

Three stalls were issued citation tickets for violating several provisions of the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance. These include selling v**e products within the premises of a government facility, selling v**e products without a permit, failure to secure a permit to sell, and failure to post a warning on sales of v**e products to minors.

An official report endorsing establishments with a history of violating the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance within the Maharlika Livelihood Center will be endorsed to the administration for their appropriate action.

PROJECT SAFE-DROP - The Smoke-Free Task Force joins the University of Baguio in launching Project Safe-Drop on Wednesday, April 8.

Project Safe-Drop is an amnesty-based initiative that allows the university's students to voluntarily surrender ci******es, v**es, and other prohibited materials anonymously and without any sanctions before entering the campus. The Office of Student Affairs and the Supreme Student Council are in charge of promoting the project.

A total of 8 boxes designed by the Campus Planning and Development Office were deployed in key areas of the university. The Office of Student Affairs, the Security Office, and the Risk Management Office are tasked with the monitoring, retrieval, and turnover of the surrendered materials to the City Government.

Congratulations, University of Baguio, on this pioneering project!

Va**ng is likely to cause oral and lung cancer, according to a comprehensive review of over 100 studies of the effects of nicotine-based e-ci******es, published this week in the journal, Carcinogenesis.

Carcinogenicity was evident in human studies that monitored biomarkers of harm, including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and โ€œepigenetic change and inflammation in oral and respiratory tissueโ€, according to the researchers, who hail from a range of Australian universities.

Meanwhile, studies on mice showed that they developed lung tumours after exposure to v**e aerosols.

The researchers focused on studies from 2017 of people who only used nicotine-based e-ci******es or on studies that compared smokers and v**ers, and excluded studies that involved people who used both to***co and e-ci******es.

โ€œSin Taxโ€ as it was worded by our Congress then and which is now interchangeably being used with the term Excise Tax are actively implemented by the premier taxing agency of our Country, the BIR.

From the time it began in 2012 [Sin Tax Reform (RA No. 10351)], it has been consistently being updated, expanding through several laws and increasing the excise taxes on products such as V**e and E-Cigarettes among other so-called โ€œviceโ€ products deemed harmful to health.

These current โ€œsinโ€ products are now being subjected to a tremendous increase in excise taxes mainly to discourage consumption, curb illicit trade, protect the health of our citizenry and to fund public health services such as medical assistance and health facilities which funding can now be used directly by the Department of Health as the BIRโ€™s and the BOCโ€™s under the Department of Finance unwavering support to the Universal Health Care Act.

Then, now and into the future, you can count on the men and women of the BIR of this Region and the Bureau as a whole in support of your advocacy on a Total V**e Ban in our country.

SINGAPORE - When the first va**ng offender was caught under temporary anti-v**e laws on Sept 1, 2025, a team at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) broke into cheers.

The team was relieved that its new digital system, which had been developed in three weeks, did not crash.

The team and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech Singapore) had raced to build the new Va**ng Information System (VIS), a one-stop platform used by enforcement officers to handle va**ng offences.

Today, VIS handles more than 5,500 cases of v**e offenders, which includes tracking features for enforcement, information-sharing between agencies, and addictsโ€™ rehabilitation progress.

Since va**ng was banned in Singapore in 2018, it had largely been treated as a smoking issue.

Parents Against V**e (PAV) and Global Youth for To***co Control (Y4TC) fully supports the Department of Healthโ€™s call for a Total V**e Ban as an urgent measure to protect Filipino youth, as we continue to witness younger children being exposed to and becoming dependent on v**e products due to appealing flavors and easy access.

As an organization committed to empowering parents, youth, and communities, we believe that policies protecting the youth are not only about their healthโ€”they are also about protecting their dreams, ensuring they grow in safe and supportive environments.

The urgency is clearโ€”it is time to protect our future generation, and it is time to ban v**es in the Philippines.

Amid growing debate over the safety of v**e and heated to***co products, 1Tahanan Party-list Rep. Nathaniel โ€œMr. Tulongโ€ Oducado has filed House Bill No. 6990, seeking to ban the use, possession, sale, and distribution of these products nationwide.

The proposed measure aims to declare heated to***co and v***r products as harmful to public health, while mandating strict enforcement measures against violators.

According to Oducado, relying solely on conflicting studies that label v**e as a โ€œsafer alternativeโ€ to traditional ci******es is not enough to guarantee public safety.
