With the theme โ๐ผ๐, ๐๐ฃ๐๐ก๐๐จ๐, ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ข๐ข๐ช๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐ฎ: ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐๐ช๐ก๐ฉ๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐๐ช๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ฉ๐จ,โ the Department of English Language Studies (DELS) of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Tarlac State University, in partnership with the College of Arts and Letters of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, hosted the 5th ELS Research Conference on May 25โ26, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Among the participating institutions was the English Language Studies Department of University of the Cordilleras.
Representing the UC ELS Department were Dr. Jessie B. Martinez, Chair of the Language Department, together with third-year ELS students who presented their research papers: Carlos Abainza, Sergia May Quines, Gavrille Yochabel Sausa, Ja-el Ahochay, Ericka Gwayne Focasan, Lindsay Mendoza, Kiana Alcantara, Shalou Balisong, Precious Iwang, and Julienne Christine Capili.
Conducted in a hybrid format, the conference brought together scholars, faculty members, and students from various State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) across the country. Participating institutions included Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Bicol University, Cagayan State University, and Mindanao State University, among others. Three insightful keynote addresses from distinguished scholars in the field were featured. Dr. Julius C. Martinez of Niigata University of International and Information Studies delivered a presentation titled โPhilippine Englishes in Motion: The Case of Filipino Migrants in Japan.โ Meanwhile, Dr. Arianne M. Borlongan of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies discussed โLanguage, Migration, and ChatGPT,โ exploring the intersections of language, mobility, and emerging technologies. Completing the roster of keynote speakers was Dr. John N. Ponsaran of University of the Philippines Manila, who shared valuable insights through his talk โAI and Ethics in Research.โ
A total of 39 research papers were presented during the conference, four of which came from the University of the Cordilleras. These papers were presented through Zoom rooms and were distributed across three parallel sessions. The UC research papers were:

The research papers by Capili et al. and Ahochay et al. received Best Paper Awards.
Indeed, the 5th ELS Research Conference was a meaningful and enriching experience for the ELS students of the University of the Cordilleras. The insights gained from the event will undoubtedly inspire and guide their future research endeavors, encouraging them to continue contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of English Language Studies.
