At the onset, the SLU KASAMA/SSC acknowledges the administrationโs efforts to respond to the immediate concerns raised by students. Measures such as academic considerations, scheduling adjustments, and the increasing accessibility of hybrid and online class arrangements are important steps in addressing the current situation. These initiatives provide much-needed relief to students who continue to navigate rising transportation costs and daily uncertainties. While these responses are significant, they must serve as a foundation for more inclusive, consultative, and sustained solutions that genuinely reflect the lived realities of the student body.
With the recently released ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ ๐๐, ๐ฌ. ๐๐๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, the SLU KASAMA/SSC would like to clarify that the council was not formally invited and did not have the opportunity to raise the concerns of the student body, as the Executive Committee had only been invited at the last hour of the dialogue. Because of this, the council did not have the opportunity to utilize the sensing form conducted the day prior.
We remain firm in the belief that dialogues like this require proper representation of the student body through the Assemblies as well as the Executive Committee. The council should have been given this opportunity, as well as due prior notice of such dialogues, to ensure that sensing forms, grievances, and possible ways forward are assessed and formalized. The struggle of the studentry cannot be merely assumed and be a last minute thought.
We also extend our recognition and gratitude to the students who have taken the initiative to voice out their concerns, share their experiences, and participate in collective discussions during this time. Your willingness to speak out is vital in ensuring that the realities faced by the student body are heard, acknowledged, and addressed.
However, while these initial responses are appreciated, we emphasize that meaningful and sustained solutions must still be grounded in genuine and broad consultation with the student body. What students call for are not excessive demands, but immediate and reasonable measures that reflect actual conditions. These must not remain as temporary responses, but be institutionalized as policies shaped with and for the students.
As oil prices continue to surge, the crisis is no longer distant or abstract. It cuts across sectors, hitting not only students but even the regular workers and most especially the jeepney drivers who now struggle to bring anything home after a long day on the road. With the increasing fuel prices consuming what little they earn, many drivers are left with almost nothing and are forced to cut trips or stop operating altogether. This results in both a loss of livelihood and a shrinking number of jeepneys on the road. The oil price hike now extends beyond an economic issueโit is already a direct strain on livelihood, mobility, and the peopleโs right to accessible education.
Within Saint Louis University, these conditions are becoming more visible. The rising cost of transportation is not just about money. It directly affects attendance, academic performance, and general well-being. Students are forced to balance heavier expenses with heavy academic demands, while unreliable transport continues to disrupt their daily routines. The burden is being felt by students, commuters, and workers who keep the university running.
In the face of this, the SLU KASAMA/SSC and the student body stand united with the broader masses in confronting this crisis. The actions taken by the Louisian community, including collective initiatives, statements, and calls for accountability, reflect a shared understanding that this struggle is not isolated.
