Since its establishment in 2023, the City Governmentโ€™s SIGLAT (Synergize Innovation and Gravitate Leadership towards Adaptive Technologies) Baguio Youth Innovation Hub has engaged with a total of 13,134 youth and directly benefited 5,966 young people from SIGLAT-hosted activities.

This was revealed by City Planning, Development and Sustainability Office (CPDSO) head Donna Rillera Tabangin during the regular management committee meeting, Aug. 11, at City Hall, presided over by Mayor Benjamin Magalong.

The CPDSO operates the facility located in the basement of the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center.

She said 1,082 stakeholders have benefited from the various services of SIGLAT whose target audience is youth and student innovators; startups, MSMEs (medium, small, and micro enterprises) and technopreneurs; researchers and faculty; and residents of Baguio.

The hub accommodated a total of 239 requests for the free use of space; handled 111 benchmarking activities of various Sangguniang Kabataan (SKs), local government units (LGUs), schools and non-government agencies (NGAs) from different parts of the country; conducted and supported 80 events, held 34 design thinking workshops.

It also held 34 design thinking workshops; assisted and supported 53 research projects (consultations, fabrications and technical); and conducted 54 immersion and internship programs, Tabangin added.

โ€œThe youth are the drivers of change and are the future leaders of Baguio. They bring innovation, creativity and energy likewise helping shape a livable and sustainable city,โ€ she stressed.

The SIGLAT Baguio Youth Innovation Hub is a safe and inclusive space to improve young peopleโ€™s safety and well-being in urban environments and involve them in ideating and implementing innovative solutions for tackling safety challenges.

It is a collaborative effort with the Safe and Sound Cities program led by the Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation in partnership with ICLEI and hosted by the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation with support from Fondation Botnar.-Gaby B. Keith

More importantly, the discussions connected sustainability with the realities of running a business. Going green is not simply about reducing waste. For Baguio, this transition is particularly relevant. With local MSMEs playing an important role in the Cityโ€™s economy, tourism, creative industries, and communities, their capacity to innovate and adopt more sustainable practices can contribute to a more resilient and competitive local economy.

But Day 1 was only the beginning.

The workshop continues on August 20 with ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† 2: ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, ๐—•๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐˜๐˜†๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, where participants will work further on their ideas through expert sessions, coaching, mentoring, and prototype development.

From changing the way we think about business to changing what we build, the journey continues.

For SIGLAT, investing in educators is an important part of investing in the youth. Teachers play a critical role in shaping how young people understand emerging challenges, develop solutions, and participate in creating more sustainable and resilient communities.
Through meaningful discussions, classroom integration activities, and collaborative exercises, the program encouraged educators to translate sustainability concepts into learning experiences that can empower young people to become more informed, innovative, and engaged citizens.

As Baguio continues to pursue climate action and sustainable development, strengthening educators' capacity creates a lasting pathway for youth participation and community impact.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong commended the youth-led Verdant Spires aeroponics greenhouse initiative, recognizing its potential to advance urban agriculture, food security, and climate resilience in Baguio City.

Developed through the Safe and Sound Cities โ€“ Baguio Liwliwa Ya Sursuro (LYS) 2.0 Youth Innovation Challenge, Verdant Spires transformed an underutilized space at Sto. Tomas Elementary School into a community learning hub featuring aeroponics technology. The initiative is implemented through the collaboration of Sto. Tomas Elementary School, the Sto. Tomas Barangay LGU, SIGLAT - Baguio Youth Innovation Hub, the City Government of Baguio, the Cordilleran Youth Center (C*C), ICLEI Southeast Asia, Progressive Igorots for Social Action, Innabuyog Metro Baguio, Dome Garden, the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office, DOST-CAR, DA-CAR, DepEd Baguio, and other partners.

During the team's presentation, Mayor Magalong highlighted the project's strong potential for replication, particularly as a model that could support local farmers through innovative and sustainable farming technologies. He also encouraged the team to explore a financially sustainable model that would enable the initiative to scale, become economically viable for farmers, and be replicated in more communities across Baguio City.
