Today we remember St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop, theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists. Born in Naples in 1696, he was a brilliant lawyer at 19, but after losing a major court case, he took it as a sign from God and walked away from law altogether to pursue the priesthood.

He went on to become one of the greatest moral theologians of the Church, known for his balanced and compassionate practice of confession and forgiveness at a time when rigid and harsh teachings abounded. He also wrote widely, from theology to devotional works, and was eventually declared a Doctor of the Church.

He is the patron of confessors, Theologians of morals, people with arthritis, callings, Redemptorist order he founded

He reminds us that holiness is not found in the big moments of life, but in the little faithful choices we make each day, even the setbacks and closed doors can be Godโ€™s way of redirecting us to our true calling.

Today, we commemorate the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, a former nobleman, military officer, and the founder of the Society of Jesus also known as the Jesuits.

In today's mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Frans Fandy Palinoan, he shared a glimpse of the life of St. Ignatius. Firstly sharing that while in battle, he suffered a leg injury and during his recovery he read stories about the life of Jesus Christ and various Saints, which brought drastic change in his perspective on the meaning of life. Leading to his transformation on becoming a priest.

Moreover, Fr. Fandy shared two lessons from the life of St. Ignatius first, God invites us in various ways to continuously improve ourselves and draw closer to him and secondly, God calls us according to our tasks and responsibilities.

May St. Ignatiusโ€™s example inspire us to heed Godโ€™s call with courage, humility, and a generous heart.

In today's Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Frans Fandy Palinoan. We are reminded that every rules have its own purpose, however, in today's gospel reading Jesus reminds that laws must be based on love. "Love is stronger than strict rules," Fr. Fandy emphasized.

Moreover, Fr. Fandy highlighted that the principle of love is also essential in the hospital setting as medical practitioners and staff strive to provide the best care for patients. He also reminded us that whatever we do for the sick and suffering, we do it for God and explained that those who serve in this way should never feel that they are losing something by doing good because even small acts that go beyond the call of duty can bring patients and their families comfort and relief.

Lastly, Fr. Fandy encouraged us to follow rules but not blindly. He reminded us to understand their true meaning, acting out of love for God and for our neighbor.

Today's Mass was sponsored by the Anesthesiology Department.

Today, July 16, we observe the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patroness and spiritual mother of the Carmelite Order. She is honored for her faithful devotion to Christ and for the brown scapular, a sign of her maternal protection and a call to live a life of prayer, conversion, and trust in Godโ€™s mercy.

At this morningโ€™s Mass in the Chapel, Rev. Fr. Frans Fandy Palinoan offered a reflection on the dayโ€™s readings, inviting us to draw nearer to God with our whole hearts. Fr. Fandy also emphasized the centrality of the Eucharistic Celebration as the living presence of Christ among us and reminded us that God is always near when we keep our hearts open. Lastly, Fr. Fandy closed with a warm invitation: โ€œLet us come wholeheartedly to God, who is always waiting to give us relief.โ€

May Our Lady of Mount Carmel guide our prayer life and lead us more deeply into the mystery of Christโ€™s love and presence.

Today, July 14, we commemorate the Feast Day of St. Camillus de Lellis, an Italian saint whose life testifies to transformation and reconciliation.

During the daily Mass in the chapel, Rev. Fr. Frans Fandy Palinoan recounted St. Camillusโ€™s journey, from his difficult early years and struggles with a short temper and gambling, which led to the loss of his wealth, to a decisive conversion. Fr. Fandy shared that in 1575, while traveling, Camillus was injured in an accident and while unconscious, he heard voices that led him to recognize his past wrongdoings and seek repentance. After his recovery, he began serving in a hospital and realized that patients' need for dignified and compassionate care.

He was ordained in 1584 and that same year founded the Order of the Ministers of the Sick (the Camillians), dedicated to serving the sick and the dying.

Moreover, Fr. Fandy drew two lessons from St. Camillusโ€™s life: First is that God always gives us opportunities to repent and reconcile. Secondly, we are called to serve others with wholehearted dedication.

Finally, Fr. Fandy concluded with an invitation saying, "let us imitate St. Camillus by being a friend to the suffering and the sick".

Today we honor Saint Benedict, a man of deep prayer, wisdom, and holiness, who devoted his life to God through silence, discipline, and peace. He taught others to live with humility, obedience, and faith, showing that even a simple life can lead to great holiness.

Saint Benedict is known as the founder of Western monasticism and is honored as the patron saint of His example reminds us to choose what is good, to stay faithful in difficult times, and to let prayer guide our daily lives.

As we remember his life, may we learn to live with calm hearts, strong faith, and a spirit of peace. May Saint Benedict inspire us to trust God more deeply and to walk faithfully in the path of holiness every day.

The program opened with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Gilbert Sales, CICM.

In his homily Fr. Gilbert reflected on the dayโ€™s readings, noting how Jesus felt a deep sense of compassion for the crowds, describing them โ€œlike sheep without a shepherd". He then incorporated this with the healthcare workers sharing that, "as healthcare workers, you see people not only with physical wounds but with fears, anxieties, and spiritual needs. Itโ€™s easy to get lost in charts, tests, and procedures; yet Jesus calls us to look beyond illness and recognize each patient as a child of God".

Fr. Gilbert also welcomed the hospitalโ€™s new employees and reminded them that at SLU, compassion transforms care, medical knowledge heals the body, while a reassuring smile, a gentle touch, clear explanations, or a prayer can heal the heart in ways medicine alone cannot. He closed by echoing Jesusโ€™ words, โ€œthe harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few,โ€ calling the staff to recognize their work as a vocation and to ask for the grace of Christโ€™s compassionate heart in their service.

After the Eucharistic Celebration, the program was conducted at the Hospital Lobby, where updates per department were shared and new employees were formally introduced.

Today we commemorate the Feast Day of Saint Josemaria Escriva, a priest and founder of Opus Dei (Work of God) who taught that ordinary life and work are the path to holiness.

Fr. Escriva was born in Barbastro, Spain, he encouraged Christians to sanctify family life, professional work, and small acts of kindness by offering them to God with love and competence. He is also invoked as a patron saint for people with diabetes, a reminder that God accompanies those who live with chronic illness.

As we honor his memory, let us ask for the grace to see work as a service to others and an opportunity to grow in virtue. Practice humility, charity, and perseverance in our daily responsibilities, and make time for prayer and compassionate care for those who suffer, especially those affected by diabetes.

May St. Josemariaโ€™s witness inspire us to find God in the ordinary and to bring Christian love into every corner of our lives.
