The program opened with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Gilbert Sales, CICM.
In his homily Fr. Gilbert reflected on the dayโs readings, noting how Jesus felt a deep sense of compassion for the crowds, describing them โlike sheep without a shepherd". He then incorporated this with the healthcare workers sharing that, "as healthcare workers, you see people not only with physical wounds but with fears, anxieties, and spiritual needs. Itโs easy to get lost in charts, tests, and procedures; yet Jesus calls us to look beyond illness and recognize each patient as a child of God".
Fr. Gilbert also welcomed the hospitalโs new employees and reminded them that at SLU, compassion transforms care, medical knowledge heals the body, while a reassuring smile, a gentle touch, clear explanations, or a prayer can heal the heart in ways medicine alone cannot. He closed by echoing Jesusโ words, โthe harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few,โ calling the staff to recognize their work as a vocation and to ask for the grace of Christโs compassionate heart in their service.
After the Eucharistic Celebration, the program was conducted at the Hospital Lobby, where updates per department were shared and new employees were formally introduced.
