As students from the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts, we witness firsthand how education continues to be treated as a privilege rather than a right. Year after year, students are made to endure inadequate services, inaccessible facilities, and a system that demands more but provides less. Behind every promise of โimprovementโ is a reality of underfunded classrooms, limited learning spaces, and a growing divide between those who can afford to stay and those who are forced to leave.
We are taught that education shapes a nation, yet we see how it is neglected by those who should protect it. Billions are poured into corruption, confidential funds, and projects that do not serve the people, while the education sector faces budget cuts and neglect. The message is clear: those in power have forgotten who they are meant to serve.
Just days ago, Super Typhoon Uwan struck our communities, leaving hundreds of Louisians and their professors struggling to continue academic life. ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ด๐ฒ๐ณ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฑโ displaced, disconnected, and trying to recover from the disaster. Yet SLU resumed classes and exams immediately, as if the typhoon never happened. Roads remain blocked, power and internet are unstable, and many are still stranded or tending to their families. This is not normalcy; this is neglect disguised as order. Being a Catholic university, we should show ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐.

We walk out because better facilities, accessible services, and fair opportunities are not privilegesโthey are rights. We walk out for the students who had to drop out because of financial hardship, for teachers who are overworked and underpaid, and for families who sacrifice everything just to keep their children in school.

Learning should not depend on how much we can pay. When corruption thrives and public funds are misused, the youth lose not just opportunities, but their faith in the very institutions meant to guide them. This is why we take a standโnot just as students, but as a generation that refuses to remain silent.
The November 18 walkout is more than a call to protest; it is a call to reclaim our right to education and to demand accountability from those who have failed us. It is a reminder that unity is our greatest strength, and that collective action is our most powerful lesson.
