Life presses us with countless demands. There is always another task to finish, another burden to carry or another responsibility calling our name. Like Martha, the woman in Scripture who welcomed Jesus into her home yet became distracted with serving, we often believe holiness is measured by how much we accomplish for Christ. Yet the Lord gently interrupts our hurried rhythm: โOne thing is necessary.โ
It is not that service is unimportant. But service without His presence becomes empty labor. Marthaโs hands were full, but her heart was restless. Her sister Mary chose differently. She sat at His feet. Her hands were still, but her heart was alive. The difference was not in activity but in proximity.
Many of us spend our days FOR Christ without spending them WITH Christ. We measure our worth by what we do, but Jesus measures our life by whether we come.
Years ago, when I was burning with passion to serve, pouring myself into ministry with tireless zeal (placing ministry above myself, my family, and sometimes even above Jesus), someone reminded me: look at how Jesus lived.
His pattern was clear. First, He sought His Father in prayer (Mark 1:35). From that intimacy flowed His care for His disciples and family. Only then did His ministry to the world follow. God first. Then relationships. Then ministry. This is the way of Christ.
The way of rest.
The way of life that lasts.
The true reward of life is not the applause of men or even the satisfaction of finishing the work; it is the nearness of Jesus Himself. When the lists are crossed out and the dishes put away, when energy fades and days grow dim, one thing will remain: that we sat at His feet and heard His voice.
Prayer: Lord, I give You my heart again- patched, fragile, but Yours. Teach this restless heart to be still. Break the illusion that doing is more important than being. May my portion always be You, and only You.
And if the world forgets every work we have done, let it never be said that we forgot to sit with Him.
For the portion we chose in His presence is the only treasure eternity will remember.
โYou will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.โ
Jeremiah 29:13
