WHEN JESUS CALLS, WILL YOU FOLLOW?
Matthew 4:18–22

What must we do as we hear Jesus calling us to follow Him?

We must..

I. RECOGNIZE His Call to Follow Him — vv. 18–19a, 21

II. REALIGN our lives with His mission. v.19b

III. RESPOND immediately in obedience. vv.20, 22

Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John with a simple invitation: “Come, follow Me.” Their response was not delayed. They left their nets, their boat, and what was familiar to them—and followed Jesus.

Following Jesus begins with recognizing His call. There are moments when God speaks through His Word and reminds us of what we already know we should do: forgive, reconcile, serve, share the Gospel, make disciples, surrender, or return to Him.

But recognizing the call is only the beginning. We are also called to realign our lives with His mission. Following Jesus means moving from asking, “What do I want to do with my life?” to asking, “Lord, what do You want to do through my life?”

Our ordinary lives—our homes, workplaces, businesses, relationships, and responsibilities—can become places where Christ is honored and where others can be pointed to Him. Following Jesus means making our lives available for His greater purpose.

And finally, we are called to respond immediately in obedience. Sometimes the problem is not that we do not know what Jesus wants us to do. The problem is that we keep delaying our obedience.

Maybe there is someone we need to forgive.
Maybe there is an apology we need to make.
Maybe there is a relationship that needs restoration.
Maybe there is a sinful practice we need to surrender.
Maybe Jesus is calling us to serve, disciple someone, share the Gospel, or give up a personal plan because He is leading us in another direction.

The disciples remind us that hearing Jesus must lead to obeying Jesus.

Jesus is still calling. The question is not simply, “Am I hearing His call?” but “Am I willing to follow?”

Recognize His call.
Realign your life with His mission.
Respond immediately in obedience.

When Jesus calls, may our answer not be “later,” but “Yes, Lord. I will follow.”

Are You Ready to Follow?
Luke 14:25-33

Homiletical Question:
How can we demonstrate that we are ready to become true disciples of Jesus?

We can demonstrate that we are ready to become true disciples by..

I. DEVOTING ourselves to Jesus above all. — vv. 25–26

II. DENYING ourselves and bearing our cross. — v. 27

III. DEDICATING ourselves to follow Jesus whatever the cost. — vv. 28–35

Following Jesus is more than simply saying that we believe in Him. It is a daily decision to place Him above everything else; to choose Him above our comfort, ambitions, possessions, relationships, personal desires, and even our own plans.

Jesus reminds us that true discipleship comes with a cost. He calls us to deny ourselves, carry our cross, and follow Him. Carrying our cross is not a one-time decision but an ongoing, intentional lifestyle of choosing obedience over personal preference, surrendering hidden sins, refusing to retaliate when we are wronged, and investing our time and resources in God’s Kingdom.

Jesus also teaches us to count the cost. Our commitment to Him should not be an emotional decision that disappears when following Him becomes difficult. A true disciple understands that there may be sacrifices along the way, but remains committed to enduring obedience and lifelong loyalty to Christ.

Yet the cost of discipleship can never compare to what we gain in Jesus. What we surrender for Him is temporary, but His presence, His Kingdom, and the eternal life He promises are far greater.

So today, we need to ask ourselves:

Am I ready to put Jesus above everything?
Am I ready to deny myself and carry my cross?
Am I ready to follow Jesus whatever the cost?

Following Jesus sometimes means letting go of what we want so that we can embrace what God wants.

True discipleship is not giving Jesus a portion of our lives. It is giving Him first place in every part of our lives.

Jesus above all.
Self surrendered.
Cross carried.
Faithfully following—whatever the cost.
