Growing up around the lakes and highlands of Cavinti, Laguna, Banca the asong gubat or Philippine forest dog spent her days climbing, swimming, and visiting the guests at a local cabin, where () first encountered her in July.

Now living comfortably in Shaira’s 10-dog household, the young pup is easily twice the size of the rest of her pack. Still, it doesn’t stop her from giving visitors full body hugs, as she understands that she is finally, fully at home.

For Vogue Philippines’ inaugural cover, the Filipina photographer lenses her rescue, whom she pulled from a life-threatening wound. Found with a chain embedded in her neck, Banca is now well on the road to recovery; a journey made possible through numerous phone calls, a photography team, an animal whisperer, and more than a couple bangka (boat) rides.

A friendship between humans and dogs is a centuries-long bond, documented and explored by Ian Alfonso, Ph.D., in β€œDogs in Philippine History.” In this collection of essays, Alfonso spotlights dogs as witnesses to Philippine history and beloved companions for as long as we can remember.

According to Alfonso, a history professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman, animals are an overlooked part of Philippine culture. Through this book, he traces the kinship between Filipinos and their pets from the past to the present.

This rainy season, let's be mindful of these critters!

This is the πΏπ‘’π‘§π‘œπ‘›π‘œπ‘šπ‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘β„Žπ‘Ž π‘π‘–π‘π‘’π‘Ž, a type of Keeled Millipede that's commonly seen in the Philippines. They are normally found in our gardens, where they munch on leaf litter and other decaying material. In doing so, they help break down organic matter and return nutrients to the soil.

However, during heavy rains like what we've had for the past month or so, they may decide to seek drier habitats inside human homes, where they're oftentimes squished under foot. Unfortunately, this also causes the release of a foul odor, which the millipedes normally use as a defense against predators like birds and small mammals.

If you see one inside your home, don't be scared of them! They are harmless to humans, and it's best to help them out of your home.

Thank you to Regel Kent Aggabao for this picture!

A quarter of a century. We sent humans to the moon before that, and yet even with Generative AI, science and technology still can’t replicate the canine snout.

The dog nose is a biological superpower. Mad respect to all our canines, especially K9s, military, and service dogs πŸ•πŸ’œ

Nearly 300 to 400 search and rescue dogs worked at Ground Zero in the days and weeks following September 11th. They moved through rubble and ash alongside first responders, their presence offering comfort and purpose when the world felt shattered. These weren't just working dogsβ€”they were partners, steadying forces, quiet heroes in an unimaginable tragedy.

All of them have since passed. But what they did in those darkest hours remains a testament to what dogs are capable of: unwavering courage, relentless devotion, and a willingness to work until there's nothing left to give. They didn't understand the scale of loss around them. They only knew they had a job to do and people who needed them.

Their legacy lives on in every search and rescue dog working today, in every handler who trusts their dog's instincts, and in every person who remembers what these beautiful souls accomplished when it mattered most. They deserve to be honored not just on this day, but always.
