๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ The Philippines was elected, by acclamation, to three United Nations (UN) bodies: the Executive Board of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) for the term 2026-2028; the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) for the term 2025-2029; and the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for 2025-2027, at elections held during the Management Meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on 04 April 2025 in New York.

The Philippines is re-elected to the CPD which advises the ECOSOC on population issues and related development policies and programs, and monitors the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The Philippines served as the Chair of the CPD during its 55th session in 2022.

The PCB of UNAIDS is mandated to establish policies and priorities for the UNAIDS towards the achievement of global targets on HIV/AIDS. The PCB consists of representatives from governments across all geographic regions, as well as nongovernmental organizations, including associations of people living with HIV. The last time the Philippines was a member of the PCB of UNAIDS was in 2002-2004.

The Executive Board of UN Women, meanwhile, serves as the governing body and supervises the operational activities of UN Women, the UN entity dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment worldwide. The Philippines last served in the Executive Board of UN Women in 2013-2015.

The Philippinesโ€™ membership in the three UN bodies will allow the country to more actively engage in global policy discussions and promote international collaboration, in support of the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as PHโ€™s national development imperatives as outlined in AmBisyon Natin 2040 and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.

Furthermore, the Philippinesโ€™ election to these UN bodies reinforces the countryโ€™s commitment to multilateralism in addressing global challenges, and solidifies the Philippinesโ€™ role as a Partner, Pathfinder, and Peacemaker in the UN.

The Sigaw ng Kabataan Coalition (SKC) welcomes the signing of Republic Act No. 12124, the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) Act, as a major step toward making education more accessible and inclusive. This law opens new doors for Filipinos, especially working professionals, by providing a legitimate pathway to earn a college degree based on their skills, experience, and knowledge gained outside traditional classrooms.

For too long, the rigid structure of formal education has sidelined many talented and hardworking individuals who, despite their expertise, were denied opportunities simply because they lacked a diploma. The enactment of the ETEEAP Act is a direct assault on the inequities perpetuated by an exclusionary educational system. It is an unequivocal affirmation that practical experience and informal learning are just as valuable as traditional academic pursuits.

SKC demands unwavering support and immediate action to ensure that this law fulfills its promise of democratizing education for all Filipinos. We call on educational institutions, employers, and government agencies to fully implement and uphold the principles of ETEEAP, ensuring that every qualified individual receives the recognition they deserve.

Education should never be a privilege reserved for a few. It must be a right accessible to all, regardless of how or where knowledge is gained. SKC remains committed to pushing for reforms that break barriers and create equal opportunities for every Filipino to thrive and succeed.
