R**E IS NEVER A JOKE.
The Alliance of Socialist Feminists in Bacolod (SOCFEM Bacolod) strongly condemns the recent disturbing statement repeatedly made by a broadcaster of K5 News FM 101.5 Bacolod during a live broadcast directed toward fellow broadcaster: “Rape-on ta ka bala.”
Regardless of intent, remarks referencing r**e and sexual violence should never be treated casually or used as humor on public platforms. Media personalities hold influence in shaping public discourse and therefore carry the responsibility to uphold professionalism, respect, and gender sensitivity in their communication.
This issue goes beyond an individual reaction. Statements such as these contribute to the normalization of violence against women and r**e culture, and undermine efforts to build safe and respectful spaces for all.
The Bawal Bastos law clearly prohibits unwanted sexual, misogynistic, or degrading remarks. It has also been clear that misogynistic and degrading speech is not protected by freedom of expression.
We call on K5 News FM 101.5 Bacolod and the Negros Press Club among other regulatory bodies of media in Negros to address the matter responsibly by ensuring accountability and proper action for the broadcaster.
Further, we call for the reinforcement of ethical broadcasting standards and the conduct gender sensitivity initiatives to prevent such incidents moving forward.
We also call on the broadcaster involved to issue a sincere public apology and acknowledge the harm caused by his statements.
As advocates for women’s empowerment and gender equality, we remain committed to challenging misogyny, r**e culture, and all forms of gender-based harassment in our communities and institutions.
