🏛️ 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐀 𝐏𝐔𝐄𝐁𝐋𝐎 𝐃𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐌-𝐀𝐆: 𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐃’𝐒 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐂 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒

Last 𝑺𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒚, 𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝟐𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, Project HAPIT continued its National History Month Heritage Walk Series with a journey through the historic 𝑷𝒖𝒆𝒃𝒍𝒐 𝒅𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒎-𝒂𝒈, rediscovering the places, stories, and memories that connect present-day Bacolod to its early communities.

Established in 𝟏𝟕𝟖𝟎 under 𝑫𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒅,Sum-ag later became an official town in 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟑 and was eventually incorporated into Bacolod during the American colonial period.

The 𝟏𝟗𝟎𝟒 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙄𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨,conducted during the American colonial period, recorded the following sitios under Sum-ag: 𝑨𝒃𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏, 𝑨𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒖𝒂𝒏, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒚, 𝑩𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒅, 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒄𝒐𝒈, 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏, 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒍, 𝑫𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒐, 𝑰𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒖𝒂𝒏, 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒏, 𝑷𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒚, 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒄, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒂𝒚𝒕𝒂𝒚, a reminder that the historical boundaries and communities of the old pueblo extended beyond what we now recognize as Barangay Sum-ag.

The heritage walk was led by 𝙈𝙨. 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙪𝙟𝙖 𝘼𝙗𝙖𝙮𝙤𝙣,a Department of Tourism (DOT)-Accredited Community Tour Guide of Bacolod City, with the valuable assistance and local knowledge of Sum-ag resident and Barangay Secretary, 𝙈𝙨. 𝘼𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙡 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖.

Together, they guided our participants in rediscovering the history, heritage, and community stories behind the different landmarks of the old Pueblo de Sum-ag:

Although 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐚𝐲 is now a separate barangay, it was included in our heritage walk because 𝑻𝒂𝒚𝒕𝒂𝒚 was historically recorded as one of the sitios belonging to the 𝑷𝒖𝒆𝒃𝒍𝒐 𝒅𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒎-𝒂𝒈. Visiting Punta Taytay allowed participants to understand that heritage does not always follow today's political boundaries. Communities change, territories are reorganized, and barangays emerge, but their historical connections remain part of our collective story.

Heritage matters because it gives meaning to the places we pass every day. A river is not simply a river, an old school is more than a building, and a shoreline is more than a destination. When we learn the stories behind these places, we begin to understand how earlier generations lived, built communities, faced challenges, and shaped the Bacolod we know today.

Through 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐓, we hope that every heritage walk becomes more than a tour, it becomes an opportunity to remember, appreciate, participate, and take responsibility for safeguarding our local heritage for the next generation.

🏛️𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐔𝐄𝐁𝐋𝐎 𝐃𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐘: 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐃’𝐒 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐁𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐍

On 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, Project HAPIT journeyed back to one of the earliest chapters of Bacolod’s history through the 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗯𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿, an exploration not only of an old settlement, but of the community whose story forms an important part of the historical roots of present-day Bacolod.

The tour was led by 3Zero Club and Project HAPIT Adviser, 𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑨𝑱 𝑫𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏, dressed in attire inspired by an 𝟏𝟖𝒕𝒉-𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒖𝒆𝒃𝒍𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒅, together with 𝑯𝒐𝒏. 𝑲𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒅 𝑫𝒋𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒅 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆, 𝑯𝒐𝒏. 𝑺𝑲 𝑲𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒅 𝑱𝒆𝒎𝒂 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑪𝒍𝒚𝒅𝒆 𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒍𝒂, who helped bring the stories of the community closer to our participants.

Magsungay matters because we cannot fully understand Bacolod today without understanding the communities that came before it. Long before the modern city expanded around us, settlements like Magsungay were already places where people lived, built communities, faced conflict and displacement, and adapted to a changing colonial world. Its history reminds us that the story of Bacolod did not begin with its modern streets and buildings, it began with its early settlements and its people.

After rediscovering Magsungay, the heritage tour continued across 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒈-𝑨𝒊𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕, tracing the transformation of the community through different periods of Bacolod’s history.

An interesting part of the tour was the story behind the name “𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐠.” According to a local urban legend passed down in the community, the name is associated with a Chinese trader known as “𝑿𝒊𝒏 𝑪𝒂𝒏,” who reportedly owned a popular grocery store in the area. While this story should be understood as part of local oral tradition rather than established historical fact, it offers a fascinating glimpse into how communities preserve memories and explain the origins of familiar place names.

Adding a deeply personal community perspective to the tour was 𝑴𝒂’𝒂𝒎 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒋𝒆, SSLG Adviser from Bacolod City National High School and a longtime resident who was born and raised in Barangay Singcang-Airport. She generously shared insights, memories, and urban legends about the community where she grew up. Her stories reminded us that 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆, 𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆.

✈️ Participants also revisited the story of the 𝑶𝒍𝒅 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒅 𝑫𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒊𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕, established by the Lopez family in 𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟲 for the 𝑰𝒍𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒐–𝑵𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒔 𝑨𝒊𝒓 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒚, and explored the memories associated with one of Bacolod’s most recognizable former gateways.

We discussed the monuments and statues that became part of the airport landscape, including those of 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼 “𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘆” 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗝𝗿., 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗼.The tour also recalled the former monuments of 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮, landmarks that once stood outside the old airport but are no longer found at the site today.

🎭 From aviation history, we moved into the story of the 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒙, remembering its significance as one of Bacolod’s major entertainment districts and a place closely associated with the city's nightlife, recreation, and leisure culture.

From 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒔𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒈, 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅, every corner reveals another layer of the community’s story. Magsungay would eventually become incorporated into what is now 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗴-𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, yet its historical significance continues to remind us of the deeper roots of Bacolod.

The 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒔𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓 is a collaboration among 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑯𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻 (𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔), 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒅 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒈-𝑨𝒊𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒍.

Through heritage tours like this, we hope to remind Bacolodnons, especially the younger generation, that 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒖𝒔.
