The Story Behind the Song "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus"

Long ago, in the beautiful hills of Assam, India, lived a man named Nokseng. He belonged to the Garo tribe. One day, he heard the Good News about Jesus Christ, and his heart was changed. He decided to believe and follow Him.

But this decision did not please everyone. The village chief was very angry. He could not accept that Nokseng had left their old ways and beliefs. So, he called Nokseng and his family and gave them a terrible choice:

"Deny this Jesus, or you will all die."

The chief expected fear. He expected them to say "yes" just to save their lives. But Nokseng looked at him, and with a calm but firm voice, he said:

"I have decided to follow Jesus... No turning back, no turning back."

The chief was furious. He ordered his men to take Nokseng's children and kill them right before his eyes. Then he asked again:

"Now, will you deny Him?"

With tears in his eyes but fire in his heart, Nokseng looked up and said:

"Though none go with me, still I will follow... No turning back, no turning back."

The chief was shocked, but he was not done. He ordered Nokseng's wife to be killed as well. Now, Nokseng was all alone. The chief asked one last time, thinking surely now he would give up:

"You have no family left. Choose your life. Deny Jesus."

Nokseng looked at the cross in his mind, then looked at the world around him. He said:

"The cross before me, the world behind me... No turning back, no turning back."

And so, Nokseng too was killed for his faith.

But the story does not end there.

The chief stood there, watching this family die one by one, yet refusing to turn away from Jesus. He was completely stunned. He realized that this faith was not just words—it was real, powerful, and worth dying for.

Overcome by what he had seen, the chief himself fell on his knees and said:

"I too want to follow this Jesus."

Because of one man's unshakeable decision, the chief and many others in that village came to know the Lord.

Today, this song is sung all over the world. It reminds us that following Jesus means choosing Him above everything else—family, friends, comfort, or even our own lives.

Let us sing it with all our hearts, knowing that no matter what happens, we will never turn back.
