BEFORE WE GIVE, WE LISTEN. 👂❤️

Sometimes we see poverty and immediately ask:

“What can we give them?”

Food?
Clothes?
Money?
Medicine?

These may indeed be necessary.

But perhaps the first question should be:

“Have we listened to them?”

A mother may not simply need another food pack. She may be looking for an opportunity to earn.

A father may not be asking for pity. He may need someone to give him a fair chance to work.

A child may need school supplies—but also encouragement and someone who believes in the future he or she imagines.

An elderly person may need medicine—but perhaps also the dignity of being visited, heard and remembered.

Jesus often encountered people this way.

When the blind man Bartimaeus approached Him, Jesus asked:

“What do you want me to do for you?” — Mark 10:51

Jesus knew the man’s condition.

Yet He still allowed Bartimaeus to speak for himself.

There is something profoundly dignifying about that.

At ARCORES Filipinas, we want our solidarity to begin not only with generous hands, but with listening hearts.

Before designing the project, listen.

Before deciding what people need, ask.

Before calling someone a beneficiary, discover their gifts.

And before trying to change a community, recognize that the community may also have something to teach us.

The poor do not need us to speak for them all the time. Sometimes they simply need us to create the space where their own voices can finally be heard.

FROM AYUDA TO HANAPBUHAY 🌱🤲

There are moments when a family truly needs ayuda.

After a typhoon.
During illness.
When food has run out.
When a parent suddenly loses work.

Christian charity tells us:

Do not pass them by. Help now.

But when the emergency has passed, love asks another question:

“How can we help this family stand again?”

Perhaps through skills training.

A small livelihood.

Tools for work.

Access to a market.

A community garden.

Support for a farmer.

Or simply giving someone an opportunity when others have already said no.

Scripture tells us:

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper the work of our hands.” — Psalm 90:17

There is dignity in being able to say:

“This came from the work of my hands.”

At ARCORES Filipinas, poverty alleviation should never mean keeping people permanently dependent upon our generosity.

Our hope is to accompany families from:

RELIEF → RECOVERY → LIVELIHOOD → SELF-RELIANCE → SOLIDARITY

And one day, something even more beautiful may happen:

The person we once helped may become the person helping another.

That is transformation.

That is dignity.

That is solidarity.

So perhaps our question today should not only be:

“What can I give?”

But also:

“What opportunity can I create?”

Buy from a small livelihood producer.
Support a farmer.
Teach a skill.
Mentor someone starting a business.
Help provide tools or training.
Give someone a fair chance to work.

Sometimes charity fills an empty hand.

Empowerment helps that hand discover what it can build.

Who Is Jesus for You?

Reflection on Matthew 16:13–20
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
EMPOWER YOUR FAITH

Many people can tell us who Jesus is.

Books can describe Him.
Teachers can explain Him.
The Church can proclaim Him.

But eventually, each one of us must answer personally:

“Who is Jesus for me?”

Peter answered:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

For us in ARCORES Filipinas, this question must also be seen in the way we live our mission.

If Jesus is truly the Christ for us, then we must recognize Him in the poor, the sick, the vulnerable, the forgotten, and those whose voices are often unheard.

Our faith cannot remain only in prayer or words. It must become compassion, solidarity, service, justice, and concrete action.

To say that Jesus is the Christ means allowing Him to shape the way we serve.

It means choosing to be present where there is suffering.

It means building hope where there is discouragement.

It means standing with communities in need.

It means transforming faith into love made visible.

May our answer to Jesus be more than a profession of faith.

May it be seen in every outreach, every act of generosity, every effort for justice and peace, and every life touched through our mission.

At ARCORES Filipinas, may we continue to place Christ at the center of all that we do, remembering that to serve the least is to serve Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Deepen our faith so that we may not only profess You with our lips but recognize and serve You in our brothers and sisters, especially those most in need. Strengthen ARCORES Filipinas in its mission of solidarity, compassion, and service, and make us courageous witnesses of Your love. Amen.

❤️ GRACIAS, ARCORES INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS! 🇪🇸🇵🇭

One month. Countless encounters. One heart united in mission.

Time flies so fast. It seems only yesterday that we welcomed our ARCORES International volunteers from Spain, and today, as you prepare for your journey home, we find ourselves saying hasta luego with hearts filled with gratitude.

On behalf of ARCORES Filipinas and the Resource Handumanan Foundation, Inc. (RHFI), thank you for the beautiful gift of your presence.

One month may never be enough to measure all that was shared—the friendships formed, the laughter, the challenges, the cultural encounters, the prayers, and most especially the time, energy, and love you poured into the communities you accompanied.

You came to the Philippines to volunteer and serve. Yet we hope you return to Spain carrying something from us as well: the faces, stories, faith, resilience, and friendship of the Filipino people—especially the children and families who welcomed you into their lives.

In the Augustinian Recollect spirit, may these encounters remain in your hearts. Mission does not end when the immersion ends. What we have encountered in love becomes part of who we are and sends us forward to love and serve even more.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the many people and Augustinian Recollect communities who helped make this month-long journey meaningful.

A very special thank you to the UNO-R Community for preparing a wonderful despedida party last August 16, complete with lechon and fellowship by the pool. More than the food and celebration, it was a beautiful expression of Augustinian Recollect fraternity and Filipino hospitality—a joyful opportunity to celebrate friendships formed and memories created during their stay.

As they made their final journey from Negros to Cebu, we likewise thank the STV-R Community in San Carlos City for welcoming them for breakfast; USJ-R Balamban for receiving them for lunch; and USJ-R Main in Cebu City for generously providing their accommodation during their final two days.

Our deepest appreciation also goes to our RHFI staff, who accompanied our volunteers throughout this entire journey. Behind every activity were people arranging schedules, preparing meals, coordinating transportation, guiding, adjusting, waiting, assisting, and making quiet sacrifices that few people ever saw. Your service and generosity made this immersion possible.

To our entire RHFI community, thank you for opening not only our facilities but, more importantly, our home and our hearts.

And with particular gratitude, we thank the Servants of Mary (Siervas de María) for generously sharing their space and extending their hospitality throughout the volunteers’ stay with us.

To our dear ARCORES International volunteers: perhaps you arrived as visitors, but we hope you leave knowing that you have become part of our ARCORES, RHFI, and wider Augustinian Recollect family.

May the people you encountered—especially the poor—continue to speak to your hearts. May what you witnessed become compassion, what you learned become commitment, and what you received become something you will someday share with others.

As St. Augustine reminds us, we journey toward God with one heart and one soul. Geography may separate us again, but friendship, faith, and mission keep us united.

We wish you a safe and blessed journey back to Spain and every blessing in the paths that await you.

This is not goodbye.

AFTER THE VOLUNTEERS LEAVE, THE MISSION REMAINS. 💙🇵🇭🇪🇸

Today, our ARCORES International volunteers begin their journey home to Madrid.

But before leaving the Philippines, they were asked to do something important:

Not to count how many activities they completed—but to ask what the people they encountered had done to their hearts.

On August 17, they gathered for their final evaluation and reflection.

We asked them:

ONE FACE — Who will you carry home?

They remembered people by name.

Debbie, whose loving care for people she barely knew left a deep impression.

The Sisters who quietly dedicate themselves to serving others.

Sr. Dolores, whose joy and enthusiasm remain visible despite difficulties.

Two siblings who reminded one volunteer of the value of family.

And the many children whose smiles brought unexpected happiness.

Then came another question:

ONE MOMENT — What touched your heart?

One remembered Ruel, a paralyzed patient whom she cared for during an apostolate with the Siervas de María. When the Sisters returned later, Ruel looked for her.

She realized that perhaps what seemed like a simple encounter had meant something to another human being.

Others spoke about encountering illness, children, poverty, and what they described as the “two realities” they witnessed in the Philippines—the striking contrast between lives of comfort and lives marked by daily struggle.

It challenged the way they looked at the world.

But perhaps one of their greatest discoveries was remarkably simple:

Be grateful.
Smile.
Be kind.
Keep an open heart.

Because we never fully know what another person is carrying.

And then we asked:

“Because of my ARCORES experience in the Philippines, when I return to Spain, I will…”

They spoke about continuing to volunteer, carrying home the lessons of the people they encountered, remaining connected, and approaching others with greater compassion and willingness to serve.

They even began imagining ways to continue helping from Spain—supporting children’s educational needs and remaining connected with the communities that welcomed them.

Finally:

ONE WORD — What is ARCORES to you now?

Their answers were:

🎁 GIVING
🌱 OPPORTUNITY

Perhaps this is the real measure of an immersion.

Not how many photographs were taken.

Not how many places were visited.

Not even how many people were served.

But whether an encounter changes the heart enough to change the way we live afterward.

St. Augustine reminds us that our hearts remain restless until they rest in God. And sometimes God disturbs our comfortable hearts through the face of another person—especially someone who is poor, sick, vulnerable or forgotten.

To our ARCORES International volunteers:

As you return to Spain, carry the Philippines with you.

Carry the children.

Carry the sick.

Carry the Sisters and people who quietly serve.

Carry the friendships.

Carry even the uncomfortable realities you witnessed.

But above all, carry the question these encounters have placed in your hearts:

“What will I do now?”

Because the plane may take you home.

But the mission does not end at the airport.

May what began as an immersion become a lifelong disposition of the heart.

🎒 WHEN A FATHER’S LOVE BECOMES A BACKPACK ❤️

Sometimes, the most beautiful gifts are not bought.

In Battambang, Cambodia, a father reportedly could not afford to buy a school backpack for his 5-year-old son. He was a daily laborer, and there simply was not enough money.

But his son needed a bag for school.

So the father used what he had.

With his own hands, he carefully wove strips of recycled plastic into a bright blue backpack—strong enough to carry his little boy’s school things and, perhaps, something even greater:

a father’s hope for his child’s future.

The image touches us not because the family had little, but because love found a way even in the midst of poverty.

And this is the spirit behind the ARCORES Filipinas BAG OF HOPE.

We do not give bags because parents experiencing poverty do not care enough for their children.

We give because they care so deeply—and sometimes they simply need someone to walk with them.

Every father and mother wants to see a child enter school with dignity. Every child deserves to feel that poverty does not determine the possibilities of tomorrow.

The father in this story wove a backpack with his two hands.

AWW! This is what love looks like when money runs out. 🥹

In Battambang province, Cambodia, a father found himself facing his 5-year-old son's first day of school with nothing to send him with. No money for a proper backpack, nothing off a shelf to offer him.

So he made one himself.

Working as a daily laborer, he spent hours weaving a backpack out of bright blue recycled plastic strips, turning scraps into something sturdy enough to carry his son's whole first day of school on its shoulders.

Photos of little Ny Keng standing proudly in front of the classroom blackboard, that handmade bag on his back, and of his father gently adjusting the straps for him, spread far beyond their small province.

In a place where many families survive on less than $2 a day, this one quiet act said everything money couldn't.

Poverty may limit what a parent can give, but it can never touch how much they're willing to give it.

🎂 KAARAWAN MO, KALUSUGAN KO: THE BLESSING CONTINUES! ❤️

From one birthday blessing, another table is filled.

Today, August 15, 2026, we held the second batch of our “Kaarawan Mo, Kalusugan Ko” feeding activity at the Resource-Handumanan Foundation, Inc. (RHFI).

This time, our children enjoyed a full meal of rice, chicken, and bihon—a simple but meaningful reminder that when blessings are shared, they can reach many tables and bring joy to many hearts. 🍚🍗🍜

We are especially grateful to our ARCORES International volunteers from Spain, who once again joined us in the activity. They helped prepare and distribute the packed meals and, more importantly, spent time among the children.

Their presence reminds us that solidarity knows no borders. We may come from different countries, cultures, and circumstances, but when we sit around one table and care for one another, we become one family and one community.

This is the spirit we hope to nurture through Kaarawan Mo, Kalusugan Ko.

It is more than feeding.

It is about gratitude becoming generosity, generosity becoming communion, and communion becoming hope.

In the Augustinian spirit, we are reminded that the blessings entrusted to us find their deepest meaning when they are shared. Our table becomes truly abundant when there is room at it for the poor, especially for children who deserve nourishment, dignity, love, and opportunities to grow.

And so our invitation continues:

Because perhaps one of the most beautiful ways to thank God for the gift of another year is to make life a little better for another person.

NOT LEFTOVERS, BUT A PLACE AT THE TABLE. 🍚💙

Sometimes helping the poor is understood simply as giving what we no longer need.

But the Gospel asks something deeper.

When Jesus fed the multitude, He did not separate the hungry from everyone else. He invited them to sit down. He blessed what was available. He shared it. And everyone ate.

This is the kind of solidarity ARCORES Filipinas hopes to nurture: not merely giving food, but building a community where nobody is forgotten and every person is treated with dignity.

Perhaps today we can look at our own table and ask:

“Is there room for one more?”

A meal shared with a struggling family.
Rice quietly brought to an elderly neighbor.
A child helped with school meals.
A farmer supported by buying his produce.
A family accompanied until they can provide for themselves.

Small acts become transformative when they are done with love.

“When I was hungry, you gave me food.” — Matthew 25:35

For us, poverty alleviation begins not from above, but beside one another—as brothers and sisters sharing one table.
