💡 When young people learn to manage resources, they learn to shape their future.

Our Tuloy Heroes joined the Financial Literacy and Project Proposal Making Workshop organized by the Negros Occidental Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Council (PAFC) to strengthen their capacity to design sustainable projects for their communities.

Through this workshop, Mah Raj, Kevin, Althea, Jobelle and Sai gained practical skills in budgeting, proposal writing, and managing initiatives that support local livelihoods especially in their local community 🌱🌊

As we work towards a bluer future, Tuloy Heroes is dedicated to provide learning opportunities and capacity building for young people in fishing communities.

The journey toward a sustainable blue economy begins! 🌊

Over four meaningful days, the women and young parents of Brgy. Nayon came together for Pagpanagat, a community training designed to build new skills and strengthen local livelihoods.

With collaboration with the NYLI Climate Solutions Center through Project REConnect, participants learned about post-harvest fisheries, product value addition, and managing solar-powered systems, all aimed at helping them create more sustainable and inclusive opportunities in their community. 🌿

But more than just learning techniques, Pagpanagat became a space for connection and collaboration. It reminded everyone that when communities work hand in hand, change becomes possible, not just for individuals but for the entire coastal community that depends on the sea. 💙🌊

The Tuloy Heroes of San Enrique joined Project Transitional Justice, an initiative that empowers communities to remember, reflect, and act for human rights last October 5, 2025.

As young fisherfolk advocates working toward sustainable and inclusive coastal communities, this experience helped them see how transitional justice can guide their efforts to protect both people and the environment through truth, accountability, and healing.

Through interactive discussions and cultural sessions, the Tuloy Heroes connected their local experiences of struggle and resilience with the broader movement for justice and dignity. The sessions deepened their understanding of human rights and the importance of collective memory in shaping fair and peaceful communities.

The Project Transitional Justice is an initiative by The Human Rights and People Empowerment Center (HRPEC), a non-government organization empowering communities to advance the cause of human rights through advocacy, cultural work, and participatory learning.

Tuloy Heroes Join Sagup Negros Digital Toolkit Launch to Share Youth-Led Fisheries and Blue Economy Innovations

At Unwrapped: The Launching of the Sagup Negros Digital Toolkit held at Negros Residence, the Tuloy Heroes showcased how youth-led innovations in fisheries and food systems are paving the way for a circular economy in Negros Occidental.

Mah Raj recounted how their journey as Tuloy Heroes in Brgy. Nayon began, starting with youth engagement under the Tuloy Heroes project, working closely with fisherfolk to address post-harvest losses, and eventually establishing a community-based post-harvest site that turned challenges into opportunities. John Rey Reyes, Project Lead, built on this by showcasing the value-adding and sustainable practices now being embraced by communities, emphasizing how these innovations create opportunities and foster resilience for local fisherfolk and their families.

To bring their advocacy to life, Tuloy Heroes Mah Raj, Kevin, and Archie conducted a live cooking demonstration of Bang!ganisa (Bangus Longganisa), a creative and sustainable product that reimagines post-harvest fisheries while addressing food waste.

The event was organized in partnership with Slow Food Negros Network and Slow Food Bago Youth FRESH, with support from the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office and the Provincial Youth Development Council, as part of the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste celebration.

Through their stories and innovations, the Tuloy Heroes affirmed that supporting young people and coastal communities is key to safeguarding our oceans for future generations. Together, we can shape resilient and inclusive food systems and a community-driven blue economy where nothing goes to waste and every catch is maximized.

On the anniversary of Martial Law, we reflect on a time in our nation’s history when fear and corruption robbed generations of their voices and futures. Decades later, the struggle continues as corruption drains our democracy, stripping children and young people of opportunities and narrowing their space to dream and live with dignity.

We have witnessed significant corruption in government projects, especially in flood control initiatives, resulting in ghost projects and wasted funds. This example illustrates how corruption undermines safety, denies communities essential services, and steals opportunities from future generations.

Corruption is felt daily when opportunities fail to reach children, services fall short, and safety is compromised. It is a theft of resources, dignity, trust, and our future.

Marginalized communities are particularly vulnerable to multiple forms of corruption, severely impacting their social, economic, and political lives. To combat this, efforts must go beyond exposing wrongdoing. Filipinos must first recognize the everyday realities of corruption and how it robs communities of dignity and opportunity. Combating corruption means strengthening transparency, demanding accountability, and creating spaces where integrity is valued. It also means ensuring that young people are given meaningful opportunities to participate and lead in shaping honest and inclusive governance.

At the Trillion March, we stood with fellow Filipinos not only to demand accountability but also to express hope that our children and young people can thrive in a just environment.

On this day of remembrance, we affirm our commitment: never again to silence, never again to corruption, and never again to robbing children and young people of the lives they deserve.

Panginbulahan! 🫧🐟

John Rey Reyes, Tuloy Heroes Project Lead, along with experts Farah Mitchelle Armateo, Rodelio Subade, Farisal Bagsit, Liberty Espectato, and Joshua Regalado, earned recognition as finalists for the Best Paper Award during the 3rd International Forum on Sustainability Science (IFSS 2025) for their research “Anatomy of Fish Losses: Nature, Drivers, and Extent in the Lens of Small-Scale Fishers in Barangay Nayon, San Enrique, Negros Occidental.”

Their study reveals how post-harvest fish losses threaten livelihoods and food security, while showcasing the resilience of women and youth in marketing and processing roles who sustain their communities. In line with Tuloy Heroes’ mission, the team advocates for youth-led sustainable fisheries networks and alternative post-harvest sites, promoting an inclusive and circular blue economy. By transforming local experiences into policy evidence, the research demonstrates that reducing fish losses builds dignity, secures brighter futures, and strengthens community resilience.
