Guardians of the Canopy: Southern Antique orientation for the Dulungan Count (Batch 1)

The skies of Central Panay are getting a dedicated team of protectors.

We recently wrapped up an intensive orientation and citizen science training for the upcoming Synchronized Dulungan Count (Aug 20-21). A passionate group of 126 participants (24 from San Remigio; 18 from Bugasong; 17 from Laua-an; 16 from Patnongon; 27 from Sibalom and 24 from Valderama) stepped up to become citizen scientists, representing at least six Local Government Units (LGUs) across southern Antique.

The Dulungan (Rufous-headed Hornbill) is the living heartbeat of our Central Panay Mountains. PhilBio in partnership with the Provincial Government of Antique through the PG-ENRO, DENR, and the local government units with support from the Conservation International-Philippines through GIZ Project TRANSCEND, Haribon Foundation and the local communities - led the training of our local volunteers, environment officers, and community leaders in identifying, familiarize with the monitoring techniques, use of equipment and recording.

When data meets community action, conservation wins. By mapping populations, these newly minted citizen scientists are providing vital insights needed to shape real environmental policies.

A massive thank you to CENRO Belison, to all six LGUs, organizers, and volunteers who dedicated their time to this cause. Southern Antique is ready to counot and be counted!

Dulungan is the local name of the endemic and endangered Rufous-headed hornbill (Rhabdotorhinnus waldeni) found only on Panay and Negros Islands..

In the year 2000, the Provincial Government of Antique declared "Dulungan" as the Bird of Antique through Provincial Ordinance No. 2000-04. Subsequently, Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-08 declared the month of August as Dulungan Month to promote public awareness and strengthen conservation efforts.

Advancing Evidence-based Conservation: updating the ecological baseline of Nug-as forest

Data drives effective environmental management. Preliminary research results were presented by the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology to the Division heads and staff of the Local Government of Alcoy, Cebu.
The presentation provided updated ecological baselines critical for local conservation planning and protected area management.

Bridging academic research with municipal governance ensures that local policies and environmental programme are grounded in current, reliable field data. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Municipal Government of Alcoy for their continued support of biodiversity research.

Bridging Science and Community in Alcoy!

Our biology students from Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology recently presented their preliminary field findings to the local leaders of Barangay Nug-as, marking a vital step in community-led forest conservation.

Nug-as forest remains as Cebu's most critical biodiversity strongholds. Thanks to the student's field assessments, we now have updated baseline data on:

๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›distribution and abundance of Cebu Hawk Owl and Black Shama

๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿƒexpanded floral records and distribution updates of Cebu Cinnamon and Cebu Blueberry

๐Ÿฆ‡๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿ€ abundance records for bats, herpetofauna, and rodents across monitoring sites

Science thrives when shared with the community. Thank you to the barangay LGU and local residents for welcoming our student researchers and continuing to protect the unique natural heritage of Nug-as.
