In our effort to source giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) poles to supply bamboo rough slats to a company manufacturing engineered bamboo, we surveyed different areas and saw these stands left untended. These photos simply show that up to now, the value of this bamboo is practically nil. Soon a company in Negros Island will start buying these poles to create livelihood for farmers. Contact Francis Bibar.

While hiking yesterday, I found these stands of giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) just growing wild. Going around Negros Island, now I can say this type of bamboo can be found in various parts of the island. Check out your own areas, especially those in the uplands. Currently, this type of bamboo has very limited market since kawayan tunok is still the preference for many bamboo applications. A company based in Negros will soon be buying poles of giant bamboo. You may contact Francis Bibar.

This bamboo is called Giant Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper). Known as Botong (Bikol), Bukawe (Tagalog); butong (Bisaya). Abundant in Bukidnon. I wonder how this is called in other Philippine dialects. If there is such a vernacular term, then it signifies, that this is native to the place.

My interest with bamboo started when I was with PAREF Southridge School in 2005-2008 as its Executive Director. Back then, I was fascinated by the beauty of bamboos as an ornamental plant. So I had a few bamboo species planted in the school like pole bamboo, black bamboo, buddha's belly bamboo, etc. That is when Mr. Ric Paloma who has retired from the Philippines Airlines, then as one of its Senior Executive Vice Presidents, shared with me some materials on bamboo. Although I have known him before, I did not know that he was a bamboo enthusiast and has a good collection of ornamental bamboos in his house in Ayala Alabang. He gave me this book (shown in photo) published in 1999 that gave me lessons on Bamboo 101. Thanks to Rick, my journey with bamboos has started on a good path. Now I am seeing the big potential of bamboo as an industry in the Philippines, dubbed is the "wood of the 21st century".
