In the UNESCO criteria for language vitality, the peoples attitude towards their own language plays an important role why languages thrive or diminish. The saddest thing is when native speakers no longer see their own Mother Tongue as a necessity but a choice, that they have to make an effort choice to use it or pass it down to their children.

Perhaps the most discomforting and discomfitting part in yesterday's From Researchers to Advocates where the college students of Mabalacat City College presented their research entitled “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀” was this slide during Abegail Canlas' presentation. Based on their research, it would seem that a lot of Kapampángans, mostly parents, no longer see their own Kapampángan Language as a necessity, and that in order to speak it or pass it down to their children, they have to make an effort to choose it.

IN MEMORIAM. Two years ago he was lively, vocal and very passionate. Dr. Herman Manalo Bognot, a graduate of Philosophy and Russian Language at the Киевский Национальный университет им. Тараса Шевченко (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv) and one of the many Kapampángans living in the Soviet Union during the Marcos era, was once one of our main resource speaker at a forum on Kapampángan Philosophy conducted by the Ágúman Sínúpan Singsing, Inc. at Lot 15. He will be surely missed. Our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest and be finally at peace.

IN MEMORIAM: Asst. Prof. Herman M. Bognot (1964-2025)

It is with sadness that the UPD Department of European Languages announces the demise of our colleague, Asst. Prof. Herman Manalo Bognot, who passed away today, 24 August 2025, at around 3:00 PM just a few months before his 61st birthday.

After finishing his Master’s degree in Philosophy at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1990, Professor Bognot joined DEL and served as the lone professor of Russian at the University of the Philippines for the longest time. A staunch promoter of Russian language and culture in the Philippines, he was instrumental in advancing many academic exchanges between the two countries.

Professor Bognot was likewise an active translator from Russian to Filipino. Among his works was Pagkakasala at Kaparusahan, the groundbreaking Filipino-language translation of Feodor Dostoyevsky’s Преступле́ние и наказа́ние (Crime and Punishment), published in 2020 by the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino - UP Diliman.

His remains will lie in state at his home at 0354 Tiangco Street, Purok 2, Tibag, Pulilan, Bulacan. The date of cremation will be announced later. Those who wish to donate to the bereaved family may do so through the following bank accounts:
