This story that I am about to tell you all may be familiar for those who have truly been with me throughout this remarkable journey. It is about my performance task on our elective subject far back from seventh gradeโwhen I was still establishing and even questioning my passion for journalism. We were tasked to choose one role in a school publication that we would intend to fill; among the executives, Iโve decided that I want to become the managing editor as it came after the associate editor and the editor-in-chief. It was because first, my classmate already intends to be the associate; second, I was scared. I was frightened not just by the responsibilities but by the weight of the title EIC itself. And how ironic that I served as EIC thereafter, the position I once feared.
Iโm sharing this story to remind us all that God has a plan. No matter how I tried to avoid it, He sparked something in me that awakened my determination to take such a crucial role and lead a vital group in our school community. Iโve been directed to His plans as He went with me through itโI thank Him for the countless opportunities He blessed The Vanguard with.
We just have to be faithful, trust ourselves, and be surrounded by supportive peers.
As EIC, I had a vision of what The Vanguard would accomplish at the end of the school yearโI envisioned our newspaper qualifying for the regional, but it did not, which made me question whether the sleepless nights were worth the effort. But when I saw how much joy being able to carry out a mass production for the school brought to my fellow campus journalists, students, and the school staff, every ounce of doubt washed-out from me. It made my definition of journalism stronger as our write-ups, cartoons, photos, and layouts were not produced to grab awardsโthey were about the thought of us producing only truth and accuracy through our works.
I am immensely grateful for the participative and dedicated team that I have led; from the writers, photojournalists, cartoonists, layout artists, broadcasters, editors, and executives. You made our deadlines possible to meet, our works accomplished, and our purpose driven.
Likewise, I am deeply moved by our audience who supported our contents and trusted us as campus journalists. Everything weโve achieved is a reflection of your continuous faith towards our works.
Last of all, my gratitude knows no bounds for our school paper adviser, Maโam Jessica. You did not only stand as an inspiring and great mentor for usโyou also manifested the traits of a friend whom we were able to share an unbreakable bond with. You have remained as the backbone of The Vanguard for years now, and it is an honor of mine to serve as EIC in your time as ACโs most outstanding SPA! Iโll keep my words when I say I will bring all your almost two years of guidance to me from being your associate editor to your editor-in-chief.
As we, another batch of blooming journalists wrap this academic year up, may our journey in the press remind us that the unrivaled shield of truth is us. We are to be responsible and transparent in our stories.
To the incoming leaders of The Vanguard, may your pens and voices be read and heard as representations of truth and objectivity. Carry on fostering a publication where students have the freedom in expressing themselves and are in no fear to be doubted nor to be judged.
It has been a great pleasure to serve a significant role in our english school publication.
