PARALAYA: AYTA WOMEN

We are very happy to have Mariel Capuno, a post graduate student from the University of the Philippines and a proud daughter of Ayta Mag-Indi and Ayta Mag-Intsi parents from Porac, Pampanga.

For this class, she gave us a meaningful insight on the role of Ayta women as cultural bearers in their community. She also shared how she faced her struggles as an Ayta woman in her journey to further her education and be able to give back to her community.

Maraming maraming salamat po, sa uulitin!

NAMIMINGAW COOKING PROJECT

Sumang kamote is a chosen legacy kakanin that elder Waray women want to pass on to the next generation.

It is prepared by shredding kamote, rolling it in banana leaves after filling it with sweet bukhayo.
It is the steamed for 45 minutes until cooked.

Namimingaw cooking project explores cooking as a form of healing. Meaning homesick or to long for in Waray, we prepare common (Waray) dishes that remind our community of their lives back home.

LIGTAS NA PAMAYANAN PARA SA KABABAIHAN AT MGA BATA

This month, we launched out 4-month community campaign to end OSAEC and CSAEM. We're using creative and child- friendly ways - art workshops, story telling, theather, and interactive talks - to reach kids and mothers where they are. The campaign runs until October, culminating on International Day of the Girl Child, Oct 11.

Why this matters now:

Days ago, PNP arrested an American national in Angeles City for multiple counts of child s*xual abuse. He was listed as Top 2 Most Wanted in Pampanga and Angeles City.

Poverty and broken family support have left children in communities near the red-light district vulnerable. The entrenched s*x tourism industry here has created s*x tourism industry here has created pathways for predators to exploit kids.

As we welcome the busier season of the year, we took a break, gathered in a circle and taught ourselves the art of embroidery.

For some magical reason, we found the repetitive rhythm of stitches very calming. A perfect way to decompress and bring the mind to a flow state.

Education through the Alternative Learning is one of the paths for individuals to exit the s*x trade.

Alaya's role is to assist women to navigate this path and help them overcome challenges that it presents. Our goal is to make the journey accessible and responsive to their needs as learners through empowerment and community.

Since we started the ALS Assistance Program in 2021, 98.7% of our learners finished basic education and managed to exit the s*x trade.

Good luck po sa mga dumalo sa unang ALS Orientation para sa darating na academic year.

Growing your own food is not only healthier and economical. It is a tangible proof of our soul's connection to land. This not only gives us back our liberty to choose what is nourishing to our bodies, it reclaims our hope that even in the darkest depths of the earth, a new life is possible.

Pakbet in our backyard.
