Our dearest Menggay crossed the rainbow bridge on Friday, April 10.
When Menggay was turned over to Hound Haven a year ago, she was already thin and frail. An old dog who had seen better years. Like so many of our dogs, we never knew her as a puppy. We never saw her run or play the way most dogs do. Yet she was there — quiet, enduring, and patient.
Menggay was not the type of dog to seek attention. She was content simply being part of the group, spending time outdoors, and lounging in the sun. That is why it felt like such a privilege to care for her the way we did in her final months.
Since October 2025, she had been staying at our co-founder’s home, where she received more focused, round-the-clock care for her heart and liver conditions, as well as her chronic arthritis. She was hand-fed, brought to twice weekly vet visits, and doted on in a single-dog household. She was loved beyond measure.
During Holy Week, she returned to the Hound Haven center for a short break, as we felt the open grounds would do her good. Her blood work had been consistently positive, and her first few days back at the center were uneventful. But on April 9, our handlers had to rush her to the vet due to extreme bloating, later diagnosed as Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). She underwent emergency surgery.
By the following morning, her organs began to fail. Her body was letting go, and she passed soon after, on the morning of April 10. She would have been 14 years old this month.
We never saw her in her younger years, but we imagine her now as she might have been then, running across the rainbow bridge, happy, healthy, and free.
It was an absolute privilege to have been your humans, Menggay. We would care for you a hundred times over if we could.
