ALABEL, Sarangani โ In the aftermath of the recent earthquake that struck parts of Sarangani, the Provincial Youth Development Office (PYDO) has expanded its Mobile Journalism (MoJo) initiative while simultaneously launching a coordinated donation drive aimed at supporting affected communities.
Mobile Journalism, or MoJo, is a digital reporting practice where journalists use mobile devices to gather, edit, and publish news content directly from the field. It enables student journalists to produce multimedia stories, photos, videos, interviews, and written reports, using only smartphones and portable tools, making reporting faster and more accessible during breaking news situations and disasters.
In Sarangani, the MoJo platform has expanded into a province-wide network of student journalists from Glan, Malapatan, Alabel, Maasim, Kiamba, Maitum, and Malungon, serving as community correspondents in their respective municipalities.
These โMobile Journalistsโ served as community correspondents assigned to cover stories from their respective municipalities.
Through the Ronda Kabataan initiative, PYDO mobilized these young journalists to help relay ground reports following the earthquake, highlighting conditions in areas that have received limited media coverage.
"Actually ang prime reason why we tapped our MOJOS aside to give them platform, napansin namo diri in Sarangani especially tung first day, is most of the media coverageโฆ mga news is in GenSan mostly ang napansin. Kaya kailangan ipahibalo that Sarangani is also experiencing the same, mas lala pa actually tungod sa kadaghan. One way sa pag cover namo sa reality tungod earthquake is through our MOJOs," according to Mark Joel P. Negro, former SJOAA Chairperson, the initiative was strengthened in response to gaps in media visibility across affected areas.
He emphasized that empowering youth reporters is central to how the province documents and understands disaster impacts at the grassroots level.
"Through maximizing the potential of our youth, thatโs how we build our provinceโthatโs how we rebuild our province,โhe added.
Alongside its journalism initiative, PYDO has also launched a donation drive titled โTuloy ang Tulong, Tuloy ang Pagbangon,โ aimed at assisting families affected by the quake. The campaign prioritizes hot meals and hygiene kits, which organizers say are among the most urgent needs in evacuation and affected communities.
The initiative calls on volunteers and donors to support ongoing relief operations, stressing that collective action is key to recovery efforts.
