Haus Pikinini has been in my head for quite some time but like most things you take on later in life, it really had to wait until the time was right.
I previously have run a street kids programme which was self-funded but was not a full-on operation and looking back I could have done a lot more than I actually did but the good news is that it has moved on and evolved into the Haus Pikinini of today where we are able to help a lot more younger children.
Our small town is in a mining impact area and we have far too many young children who slip through the widely-acclaimed Wantok System which has broken down under the strain of far too many deaths of young parents.
I have a large property which is quite ideally set-up and has been turned into a home for young children who are not being adequately fed, looked after and are not going to school as they should be as education is the only way they will escape the cycle of poverty.
I have set it all up as a home rather than an institution and the 29 little children we are caring for learn basic literacy skills before they start school and are being fed and clothed and we are trying to restore them to an acceptable state of good health. I have a staff of 10 others as we are in 2 buildings and the children have to have 24 hour care.
I am a firm believer in love and compassion and the children have responded to this very well. I also believe that they will become more confident when we are able to recognise individual talents that they may have.To this end we encourage them to sing, play musical instruments, paint and draw and play sport.
Haus Pikinini has come to the stage that it has reached today through Facebook as that is my main means of communication and through friends and contacts we have accessed the help we needed to come this far. People and church groups who visit us cannot believe how happy and how well-mannered the children are.
I am connected with another charity in Australia called Paradise 4 Kids(P4K) and they support an orphanage in Sierra Leonne. They have shared ideas to help me fundraise for a new building on land which I have donated to P4K-PNG Haus Pikinini Project. The premises we are using now have been leased by me to the project for 20 years at an annual figure of K100 per annum. We are very fortunate to have these buildings as they are just perfect to provide the home-care that we are giving .I also have provided 7 staff houses and 20 acres of land for the project which we are using.
With the help of Paradise 4 Kids we have been given the green light by a charity monitoring group called HADA in Qld and have been approved by the Australian Tax Office as a Not-For-Profit Charity. We have lodged with the PNG Internal Revenue Commission and should be receiving our tax deductible status very soon.
There are so many challenges but they are being ironed out one by one. I do regret having to turn away people on an almost daily basis but I honestly believe we would be doing a disservice to the children we are caring for if we sacrificed quality care for quantity of children. To this end we will continue and hope that the end result will be young, educated and well-brought up individuals who can contribute to their communities and not be a burden.
