Sago Network

Sago Network Sago Network is a not-for-profit NGO that partners with coastal and rural communities to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Sago Network is a not-for-profit design-build community development company that collaborates with communities in Papua New Guinea to address water and sanitation challenges. The need to address these fundamental building blocks for healthy living is revealed by UN figures which show the extent of the challenge facing PNG's rural communities:

• 32% access to safe water supply (Global average 83%)

• 41% access to improved sanitation (Global average 58%)

Each project undertaken by Sago Network to address these water and sanitation challenges aims to place local people at the centre of their own development process, empowered with the decision-making ability to shape the project's core objectives and encouraged to make a meaningful contribution toward their achievement. The team's approach values process as highly as product - seeking to undertake a planning, design and construction process that is inclusive and capacity-building in nature toward its built objective. Each project draws from a network of professional and student collaborators to form project teams that are uniquely tailored to the specific development challenge at hand. This project approach views the collaboration between local, professional and student team members as a true knowledge exchange and values local solutions and traditional culture highly.

World Toilet Day 2025!
Sanitation in a Changing World... We'll always need a toilet.

Did you know that Sago Network was created to help solve the sanitation problem faced be many communities living in flood-prone and/or high water table areas?

For a sanitation solution to be resilient to climate change, it needs to not be affected by rising sea levels, high groundwater table, floods and droughts. The Sago Dry Toilet was designed specifically as a solution to these challenges.

Making safe sanitation for all possible in a changing world.

Today is Global Handwashing Day!

The power to save the lives of millions is in your hands. And theirs. The simple act of washing one’s hands – with soap – can dramatically reduce the incidence of diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, which together account for the majority of deaths of children around the world. The challenge is to make people aware that such prevention can be so simple and inexpensive, and yet so effective.

Our team recently had the opportunity to visit Laukanu Village in Morobe Province. Laukanu is a community Sago Network has partnered with for many years. In 2019, the community took part in a sanitation programme funded by Steamships Trading Company. Eight families built their Sago Dry Toilets during the programme. Hear from Wa John Dambui as he shares his experience using the Sago Dry Toilet for the last 7 years.

Tok Save - Friendly Reminder!
This July do not forget to swap your tanks!
By now the content of your July tank has dehydrated and is ready for emptying and your January tank is ready to be closed down for the next 6 months.
Putting extra ash in the January tank before shutting it down will help the dehydration process.
