Today is World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, and it comes at a moment of profound alarm.

"Too many of our colleagues have been killed - some while driving ambulances, working in hospitals and responding to emergencies; others while helping people in their own communities. We honour them and mourn alongside their families, loved ones and colleagues.

On this 8 May, we call on all those with influence and responsibility to uphold the protections that civilians, medical personnel, humanitarian workers and communities depend on. Respect for the emblems, for humanitarian rules and principles, is therefore essential."

| World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2026

In PNG and across the world, our volunteers and staff stand beside communities during floods, earthquakes, disease outbreaks, tribal conflicts, and other emergencies. They are not strangers to the people they help. They are neighbours, friends, family members, and part of the same communities.

In difficult times, humanity brings us together. From remote villages to urban communities, PNG Red Cross volunteers continue to provide first aid, emergency relief, health awareness, and support to vulnerable people with compassion and dignity.

This year’s theme reminds us that every person deserves care, respect, and hope. In a world facing division and hardship, we choose unity, kindness, and service to humanity.

We also honour the courage and commitment of humanitarian workers and volunteers around the world, especially those who risk their lives to help others in times of crisis. Their service reminds us why protecting humanitarian action is so important.

For more than 160 years, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has stood with people in need across the world. In Papua New Guinea, we remain committed to serving communities with neutrality, independence, and impartiality, ensuring help reaches those who need it most.

This year we celebrate the power of compassion in action. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are .

The British High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Paul Eastwood visited Milne Bay Province on 25 April as part of the United Kingdom’s support to communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila and meeting with Provincial leaders, disaster management authorities and other local stakeholders.

During the visit, the High Commissioner met dedicated Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society (PNGRCS) volunteers who have been on the frontlines of the response from Day 1. Discussions with PNGRCS volunteers focused on ongoing relief efforts, including the role of the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society and support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Assessments conducted across affected islands highlighted significant impacts on critical sectors such as health, water, shelter, and food gardens. These insights are guiding current response operations.

The High Commissioner expressed appreciation for the tireless work of Red Cross volunteers in Milne Bay and across the country. PNGRC Milne Bay Branch also acknowledged and appreciated the UK’s continued support, including the delivery of relief supplies during the visit in Milne Bay.

The UK is contributing to humanitarian response efforts through its longstanding support to IFRC’s Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), which has approved to allocate CHF 250,000 to assist PNGRCS’ relief operations in affected provinces in Papua New Guinea following Tropical Cyclone Maila.

The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society is currently mobilising pre-positioned relief items to support affected communities in East New Britain Province, Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and Milne Bay Province.

Tropical Cyclone Maila Response Update
_____________________________________________

Over the past few weeks, Papua New Guinea Red Cross staff and volunteers in Milne Bay, East New Britain and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville have been working on the ground to support communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila.

We are working closely with partners, including the National Disaster Centre’s National Emergency Operations Centre, which continues to coordinate the government-led response with provincial authorities, security forces and the Disaster Management Team.

Initial assessments show that more than 13,000 people have been affected, with over 12,000 in need of humanitarian assistance.

Our teams are coordinating with partners on the ground, carrying out needs assessments and collecting information to better understand the situation and support communities in the most effective way.

PNG Red Cross with the suppport of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is mobilizing its prepositioned non-food items, including shelter materials and essential household supplies, hygiene kits etc. to support the ongoing relief efforts for affected communities.

Tropical Cyclone Maila – PNG Red Cross Response Update

Tropical Cyclone Maila developed in the Solomon Sea and intensified rapidly, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides across parts of Papua New Guinea. The cyclone has significantly impacted communities in Milne Bay, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and parts of East New Britain.

Homes, food gardens, and livelihood have been affacted. Entire island and coastal communities have been affected, with displacement reported and essential services disrupted. Loss of life has also been reported due to landslides and flooding.

The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society (PNGRCS) with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross has activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is coordinating response efforts across affected branches.

PNGRCS volunteers are currently on the ground working closely with Provincial Disaster Centres, Emergency Operations Centres, and partners. They are supporting rapid assessments in affected communities, particularly in Milne Bay and Bougainville, alongside inter-agency teams.

Information from these assessments will guide the delivery of humanitarian assistance in the coming days.

At the same time, PNGRCS is preparing a Disaster Response operation to address urgent needs. The response will focus on emergency shelter, safe water, hygiene support, basic household items, and health and psychosocial support.

PNGRCS is working with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and partners to mobilize resources through a DREF operation to support affected populations.

PNG Red Cross remains committed to supporting communities affected by Cyclone Maila. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

A look back at how we marked International Women’s Day 2026 at the PNG Red Cross Inclusive Education Resource Centre.

Students, staff, and partners came together to reflect on the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” and to share messages on gender equality, inclusion, and respect. The event highlighted the importance of inclusive education and the role it plays in supporting girls with special needs.
