Why do we need Workplace TB Wardens?

Because again this month, 13 of the 16 people attending our Workplace TB Warden course had experienced tuberculosis firsthand in their family or workplace.

PNG’s TB crisis is not simply a story of poverty. More than 70,000 people develop TB each year and around 12,000 die. This tragedy is the result of decades of neglect, complacency and poor understanding of a disease that is both preventable and curable.

The forward thinking businesses who sponsor our Workplace TB Wardens program are helping to change that.

We train workplace leaders to recognise the signs of TB, reduce stigma, challenge misinformation and support people to access free testing and treatment. Most importantly, they learn that early diagnosis saves lives.

Ending TB is not just a health issue. It is a workforce issue, a productivity issue and a national development issue.

Our newest TB Wardens created four fun Port Moresby scenes - a crowded PMV, a busy bank queue, the movies and a packed nightclub, to show where TB can spread and why awareness matters.

Please share them and start a conversation about TB with your family and colleagues. Conversations about TB help find cases earlier, support treatment, and bring us closer to ending TB in PNG.

One of the powerful parts of our Workplace TB Wardens Training is learning to walk in the shoes of a person with TB.

TB wardens notice symptoms, know the clinics, ensure sputum is taken, help whist waiting for test results, support attendance at appointments, promote treatment adherence and help to manage work and family responsibilities. The TB journey can be long, confusing and overwhelming.

By understanding the clinical pathway firsthand, we spread kindness, reduce stigma, encourage early testing and help people access the free services available through our partners in provincial health services.

TB is preventable. TB is curable. We want to see every worker supported along their journey

At my first day of TB warden training, I learned that TB is airborne and HIV is a sexually transmitted and blood borne virus. TB killed more than ten thousand Papua New Guineans last year, and thousands more died of untreated HIV infection. Last night I shared this information at a haus krai for which I was the MC. Most importantly, I told all my family members and friends, that all deaths from TB or HIV are preventable, if we support early testing and to free treatment. Nobody needs to die from TB or HIV in PNG. Got a question? To we need to get the diagnosis right.

The best way to confirm TB is to find the bacteria through approved tests such as sputum microscopy and GeneXpert. Accurate diagnosis means the right treatment, earlier detection of drug-resistant TB, and better outcomes for patients and their families.

water water water! and not enough to drink or wash your hands!?! water security is directly linked health, food safety, worker productivity and particularly the prevention of diarrhoeal disease outbreaks. Even short disruptions can have devastating consequences in crowded households, settlements and workplace compounds if people are not given clear public health advice. Water PNG Limited team would appreciate more and better information well ahead of water disruptions to lifesaving water supplies.

Remember:

Safe Water + Soap + Good Sanitation = Fewer Cases of Diarrhoea, Typhoid, Cholera and Other Infectious Diseases.
